IT.COM

DAN.COM and the complicated SECRET KEY system they are using

Spaceship Spaceship

I just run across a very serious problem with DAN.com, which may explain my lack of recent activity from DAN.

So I make an offer today using dans' domain lander page for a DAN listed name. A few hours later I get email from DAN saying I needed a secret key to login to view the sellers counter-offer something I never heard of before.

That message also said my secret key was already sent to me separately (but I have no record getting it).

It looks like you cannot get a reply unless you have that odd needed secret key which I feel is an unnecessary and complicating extra stop which purpose I do not understand.

Anyway, the DAN page said if I forgot my secret key (I never had it so how could I forget it) click here to get a new secret key but upon clicking on it to get my new secret key I get this error odd message below:

"Oops, this page doesn't exist"

Now what with the SECRET KEY system obviously being broken not only can I not get replies to any offers I make but a similar or related bug may be a problem for any inquiries and sales I get (but maybe not) if my buyers encounter the same bugs, which would seem possible.

I am not able to get this resolved quickly because it appears DAN chat support is online during business hours based on The Netherlands time zone with a difficult for support long 9-hour time difference.

Do not misunderstand I love DAN.com (which otherwise offers a superb and innovative new platform) however this is a very serious problem that may have been going on a long time. Has anyone else ran into it yet?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Interesting, I have never heard of secret key and if I have one do not know about it (although I have never tried to buy on the platform, just sell). I have had offers that converted to sales on the platform, including one since the transfer to DAN system. There is a thread for DAN/Undeveloped feedback here, maybe this should move to there to get answered? The founder is active on it regularly.

Thanks Bob did not know about the DAN feedback thread but a problem moving it there now is the 9-hour time difference and if the counter-offer which I cannot look at was good I want to buy it now, not tomorrow.

So by posting this here now I was hoping someone else knows about the SECRET KEY and bugs so I can do something with the un-read counter-offer today.

Neither did I until today. Maybe it is something new. I don't understand why they made it sooooo complex to read a counter-offer.

This is what the email said:

Please login here to manage your domain negotiation and transfer. We’ve sent you your secret key via email.

(a run box appears below to enter my secret key)

and a Forgot Your Key? link which does not work.

The secret key is most likely used in conjunction with blockchain technology. Usually called a "private key."

If you log into your Dan account, ignoring the email about the secret key, it does not show up as a communication there by possibility.

I did not think it would be there but I looked anyway and it is not there. Not there because I made the offer using a Gmail address which is not on my Dan account but I did give my phone number on the offer form and DAN did not match up the offer to my account which is not surprising. The form never asked me to login or wanted to know if I had a DAN account or open an account.

Update, Problem solved on this one.

I got email with the secret key and see a $50,000 counter-offer from the low minimum acceptable offer shown of just $1,000. That is a far far too big a spread and way over-priced, IMO on a name I would estimate to be 5k max. Of course, I very quickly declined the 50k offer to buy.

After getting the 50k counter I checked GD value tool which was unsurprisingly less than 5k.

Some people believe they need low (compared to the desired price) make offer to get the buyer on the hook. Also, the seller could forget to enter anything, and in such cases, the settings-defined minimum offer is used.

I could understand if you tried to use this as argument while negotiating with a clueless seller. But you make this comment to the unrelated people like you seriously consider this GD valuation to be worth something. For real? Wanna buy some GD-valuated domains for only 1/10 of the valuation? :xf.wink:

Hi Namemarket,

Since we introduced DAN, we've revamped our buyer control panel and send sensitive information to buyers via that page. To improve security, buyers get a secret token with which they can access their buyer control panel.

Based on your message you probably missed the token in the first email we've sent you after you confirmed your offer. You can easily request to reset the token on the login page.

Since the new system is in place, our sellers are selling more not less. We've processed 29% more transactions in July:

I bought a name there a few months back and the key aspect was in place before they were DAN. I had no issue typing the code in.

Thanks for the feedback.

Actually I do think the GD value tool is worth something. It often does a fine job showing comp sales and on some names I feel the GD value can be used successfully as a BIN price or the Minimum offer, especially if i am not sure of value and after looking at the GD comps data which may be important to review.

Of course it's far from perfect and sometimes way too high or low. An example of some accuracy is that 50k seller price name which I earlier thought was no more than a 5k name and later on the GD value tool agreed with me saying a little less than 5k missing my estimate by just $200.
