Hi, I know of a domain name that went thru the expiration, closeout process by GD. It has crossed 41 days and GD says the domain is returned to the registry. It is a .com domain name. How may days it will take for the registry to make the domain available for others to register? I tried to search ICANN site for this info but I don't think I find anything useful. When I type the domain name, it goes to GD site and it says "This Web page is parked FREE, courtesy of GoDaddy" followed by a button "Get This Domain". When I click on that "Get This Domain" it shows a page saying "Domain Buy Service" and it is saying that I can buy it for $69.99 + commission(*)". So I am confused. If GD has returned it to the registry why GD is still saying something implying that still own the domain?

What is the exact "Domain Status" when doing a whois lookup on it? Once it reaches PendingDelete status you know it'll be dropping within a week and can probably look it up and find the exact drop date (end date) on ExpiredDomains.net

When the 41st day has passed, (and isn't sold in aftermarketauction or firesale by Godaddy) the domain goes into Registry Redemption, which is a period of 30 days in which you can still renew the domain. HOWEVER : You have to call Godaddy to do that. And they charge a Registry Redemption Fee. i think it will be 80 USD Registreeredemptionfee + normal renewalprice you have (if you are GDD-clubmember that's +/- 8,50 USD. So renewal costs you now some 88 USD.
Transferring away isn't possible , so yu only can renew this way (transfer away can be done until day 29 after expiry, but you speak of 41 days passed erxpiry).

Anyhow : After the Registry Redemption Period, in which you can renew paying an extra fee, begins the official "pending delete-period". This is a 5 day period where nobody van renew or register the domain. The day after this period the domain is dfropped and available for the public to register at normal pricing again.

(Note : The period after day 12 after expiry or day 18, -that differs-, if you want to renew at Godaddy (not if you want to transfer out, what is much cheaper, and you can still do that still till day 29 after expiry), GDD also asks a Redemptionfee if you want to renew at Godaddy. This is not the offfical Registry Redemptionfee, but Godaddy asks then yet a Redemptionfee of 80 USD to renew.

The official 41 days you are talking about are in fact called the "Grace Period".
Depending on the registrar, you can renew at normal pricing untill day 40 or so.That's strictly speaking the normal procedure. But there are several exceptions to that : I mean : this can differ from registrar tot registrar.
(I'm talking here now about com, net org info etc.. domains,NOT cctld's from countries : lot of countries use different periods).
Some registrars use more narrow grace periods to renew at normal pricing (and they can also block transferring out immediately after the domain is expired : again this also depends from registrar to registrar).
Different registrars (dynadot, namesilo, godaddy, etc....) even hold auctions after 30 days with these domains. So other people can buy the domainname at that time by winning an auction or a firesale. And then the domain WILL NOT GO into Registry Redemption, if the domain has been won in such an auction, but to the winner of that auction, if he or she pays of course. If nobody is bidding on the domainname : The domain will go into Registry Redemption Period as I mentioned.
BUT there are exceptions and differences between different registrars how they manage these auction, and if you still can renew, if you have to pay a fee to renew during grace period etc...
As far a I know :
At DYNADOT from till day 29 after expiry the owner can simply renew at normal renewalcost. A day later begins the auction.(that lasts 7 days) Even if somebody wins that auction the currrent owner can renew from day 30-39, by paying what DDOT calls a "late renewalfee". In emails you get when a domainame hits day 30 after expiry : It says that the domain is in "Redemption" (again this term is stricly speaking here not correct : it's a kinda Registrar Redemption). The auction takes some 7 days and then there are 3 days left. If somebody wins the auction, or nobody wins the auction : that makes there no difference : The owner can renew the domain still even if somebody won the auction by paying renewal fee + 10 USD late renewalfee (the winner of the auction gets his money then back though but on a Paypal-balance to buy things at Dynadot with; not to his Paypalaccount or creditcard), .This 10 USD late renewalfee is also required if nobody bidded on the acution. But if somebody wins the auction, and the previous owneer doesn't renew within 3 days paying normal renewal price and 10 USD late renewalfee, the domain is going to the winner of the auction, and you can't get it back then anymore unless you buy the domain from the winning bidder(only visible in whois after 5 or 10 days later). If nobody wins the auction and you do nothing, it goes into Registry Redemption at day 40, (30 days) in which you can renew the domain by paying Registry Redemption Fee (80 USD ususally), then you have 5 days pending delete, and then it gets available at normal price. Transferring out after expiry is possible if you call them or/and email them to make this possible. (maybe chat is also possible, they have chat now). You have time till day 27 to do that (after expiry). For some extentions they won't allow transferring out.
At NAMESILO : After expiry you can renew until day 31 at normal pricing (and if nobody bids, maybe till day 33).There's afterwards an auction of 3 days or so, but you can't recover the domain then no more if somebody bids on it and pays the auction. As far as I know they PUT them in Registry Redemption Period already the 34th day or so (so they don't wait till day 41). This means that you can recover the domain by paying a Registry Redemption Fee. If the domain has been sold in (aftermarket)auction you can't recover it by paying a "late renewal fee", like at dynadot. You simply lost the domain.
At GODADDY : I pretty much explained this before in this message.
At DOMAINMONSTER (now merged with another company), you have a grace period of 16 days, and on the 17th day they put them already into Registry Redemption Period. (but there's no auction, so if you forget, you can renew by paying during the 40 days of Registry Redemption by paying Registry Redemption Fee.).

In time, as you see you are a new member, you'll learn more about these as you go on buying. But read here at the forum, and the term of the registrar, and do email them and call to know how it's exactly at that registrar, and how they work, and how much their Registry Redemption Fee is : Sometimes registrars can ask even 200 USD or more as RegistryRedemption Fee : So check this !!!!
Better is to renew before expirydate of course if you have money enough and you find the domain important. Because at expiry the hosting is coupled off your domainname.
So your website isn't visible anymore if a domain expired.

AND WHY DO YOU SEE at Godaddy now "parked free", and "why is there's the possibility to buy the domain via the "buy domain service" ", that's probably because they try to sell the domain during the Registry Redemption Period of 30 days (at a higher price then the RegistryRedemptionfee they have to pay to the registry of .com), so they can gain money from it).
BUT probably the owner can still renew the domain paying the RegistryRedemptionfee + renewal (what lots of people don't do).
So to explain the reason why you see now what you see as website ?
To say it simple......it's all about the money !

I always just check at internic.net/whois.html and look for PENDING DELETE and then I'll backorder if I really want it.
