The .WED gTLD has been in EBERO for a few months now. It only has around 43 domain names. By comparison, the .WEDDING gTLD is doing relatively well. The main things that concerns those buying a registry is the number of registered domain names and the renewal rates. TLDs with less than 10K registrations can be at a disadvantage and it might require a lot of money in marketing to make such a purchase viable.

Closest would be .rip

How does this work for stuff like .mcdonalds, .htc etc, do they expect it to be viable or are they creating it with the idea that it's going to be temporary from the get-go?

Do these huge corporations get suckered in by a smooth talking registrar and then realize they aren't getting any value out of it, so they retire the extensions?

Really curious if anyone knows any history behind the corporate ones in particular.

Most of the corporate gTLDs were for brand protection and to provide a unified brand on the web. This came about largely because of the way that their brands were being abused by mass Domain Tasting. But when mass Domain Tasting was stopped, much of the need for brand gTLDs disappeared. However, there are some brand gTLDs that are making very good use of their brand gTLD.

I think it's a mix of two conditions:
  • brand consultants have told brand owners having your own corpTLDs is the next big thing since sliced bread, and they should apply for one in order to enhance their brand
  • fomo (fear of missing out): just in case new extensions take off, they don't want to be seen as laggards, instead they want to be seen as leaders and innovators
Now they see that new extensions are not becoming mainstream at all and they don't really need them.
Of course it is puzzling to see big corporations wasting 6 figures on TLDs to ditch them a few years later, but they waste money on other projects all the time. Many projects and experiments turn out to be failures. TLDs are no different.

There is no (sorry english language) shortage of "marketers" attempting to create demand where none actually exists. Why? In order to sell their product or service...and no i am not a domain surgeon, nor scientist :)

Most of these brand gTLD consultants didn't seem to know much about the domain name business or brands.

The same could be said about registries :) But it's more or less the same people.

True. :) But there are some terrifyingly bad examples of the whole "if you build it, they will come" strategy that some of these people seemed to have promoted.

I'm currently running a test on web usage on .PRO, .CAT, .TRAVEL, .MOBI and .XXX gTLDs. It is almost like some of the usage patterns in these gTLDs reflect some of those in the NGTs.

Those have been around for quite a while, .xxx being the most recent of them. Why are you testing them? How do they compare one against the other in terms of commonality? .CAT is essentially a ccTLD, .xxx is adult, .pro speaks for itself as does .travel, and .mobi has been dead for years..

None of those are internal branded extensions either, and available to all to register.

Just curious. Seems you're testing unpopular extensions?

I test almost every extension. This is web usage analysis to see how the domain names are being used and the health of the TLD. Commonality is just cross checking the domain names against other TLDs. The .XXX is currently around 5% active. There is some more parsing in progress so that will bring it down a bit. The .CAT looks like an early stage ccTLD. The odd thing is that .MOBI is not quite dead.
