Is "buy" a good prefix?

Is "buy" a good prefix if a domain I want to register is taken and buy makes sense with the other words in the domain?

Yes, if it makes sense (like you said it did) then I would say it's a good alternative. I like the prefix because you pretty much know what to expect to see on the website before you even visit it. Here are some successful websites and businesses that use the buy- prefix and you can see what I mean:

It sure is. When a new product or technology comes out, the buy prefix domain usually gets regged straight away.

For example, just see how many extensions BuyDrones is taken in.

I've had many "buy" domains over the years.

Some with pretty decent keywords.

Never had an offer on one.

Over time I had to drop them.

Also have had "shop" and "order" as the prefix.

Same results.

When I check on some of my past, dropped domains of this type I see they have been making the rounds from one domainer to another, and I have not seen one that I have dropped, sell.

I think it could be a good prefix to do outbound marketing on, if you are into that.

Never tried it with the ones I had.

It could work.

As a consumer, and only as a consumer, I don't like this prefix. I think I'd rather look for something more informative if I were in a buying mode.

From a domainer's point of view, it's a moderately popular prefix with only 60-70 domains reported sold in namebio each of the last 2 years (and the average price in 2016 was only ~400$.)

An other indicator: I found only 32 shops using 'buy' as a prefix in a sample of 70k+ shopify stores.

Not very promissing IMHO.

Buy is surely a very popular search term. But I guess Google doesn't consider keywords in the domain much these days?

I've got BuyAny.com (buy any dot com). I haven't done much with it, but I plan to develop it as I re-immerse myself into the domain trading market. I also registered buyany.xyz to use with my new found interest in xyz names.

expect 10 years before a sale happens

I've owned over 20 years many prefixes and developed many and still hold some
Not one was a 'buy' prefix though

Geo's were good prefixes until Google killed geo EMD's

Now all the prefixes we develop and invest in as spec assets are

i prefix
1 prefix
247 prefix

e was always a good prefix

top
best

are actual 'search prefixes'

I don't think many use 'buy' as a search prefix

so if you have oodles of dough to brand a 'buy' prefix it's a decent development prefix but to me it's not a real prefix since it's not like e, i or 1 and it's not a term like top or best that people really use

now 'where to buy' is a search term, but 'buy', it just doesn't lend itself to seeing results IMO

it doesn't mean you can't sell it though, but it would be a minor sale if one should occur

good luck if you own any

So all the guys like us sitting on thousands of geo EMD's dropped most of them

Worthless unless you want to sink a ton into development

if you don't know what an EMD is, 'exact match domain'

so geokeyword.tld became a negative in google's eyes

not sure if it was panda or penguin but they specifically targeted geo EMD's with one of their tweaks

it's old news, many years old

I agree with him. Buy is a popular prefix and have lots of sales especially in the past when EMD were too much powered. Poor quality websites could rank in high position just because of their domain name.
today things are very very different.
EMD can still kill the competition if gathered with really great content and SEO, so IMHO "buy" prefix has now lost a big part of his prestige..
