Hi everyone!

I hope this is OK to post in this section right out of the gate...

There is a name that expired a week ago that I would like to buy. Am I correct that the current owner has about an 80 day grace period before it gets sent to an auction or returned to the registrar?

This isn't what I would consider to be a high-demand name. Just something that is parked that I would like to use for my personal website.

Thanks for the help and please excuse my ignorance!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
There is a specific drop cycle the name goes through. It usually becomes available for new registration on the 81st day if its a .COM domain. Depending which registrar it's currently with, it may go through some auction periods before that date ever arrives. We might be able to help you determine if it will go into any sort of expired auction if you let us know where it's currently registered.

Thank you for the reply.

The registrar is Wild West Domains.

Wild West Domains is partnered with GoDaddy Auctions, so after the expiration date it is likely to show up there if the owner does not renew it within the "auto renew grace period" set forth by Wild West Domains, this is usually a window of 1-3 weeks but others who may be more familiar with WWD might know the specifics.

If it is not renewed, the WHOIS will show pending delete and it will be an expiring auction on GoDaddy.

If it is very important to you, it would be worth keeping an eye on that auction and maybe even bidding/buy it now.

Thanks for the replies.

So basically it's around an 80 day wait before it will show up to the GoDaddy auctions?

It's about 80 days from when it expires to when it becomes available 'to the public'. Prior to that, it will be available on GoDaddy Auctions for bids. You could expect to see it in auction no later than 30-45 days after expiration. It will "drop" if the auction receives no bidding activity and be available first come, first serve.

It should show up on auction 26 days after expiration. Then it will be in a 10 day auction.
Even after the auction the original registrant can still renew the domain for an additional 7 days, at a higher price (around $80).

What is the preferred registrar for parking and hosting for you guys and girls on here?

I have really like the flexibility and reporting that VooDoo.com has and park most things there. As far as registrars, its a toss up that comes down to preference and price. I like taking advantage of GoDaddy sales and have quite a few things registered there but also uniregistry's ease of use and straight forward approach is great in my opinion.

Not sure where Public Domain Registry does their expiration auctions, maybe someone knows and can help us out? You may even inquire with their support, they'll usually be able to let you know where/when you could find it at auction.
