GoDaddy Discrimination

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
GoDaddy is a discriminatory company.
By releasing only US and Canada promo codes they are discriminating customers from other countries.
Asked them about this situation, but they can't give me an answer, only "you are using an expired or restricted code".
I really liked GD, but now it is changing into a piece of "excrement"...

That's an absurd statement.

How come advertising networks pay more for U.S. and Canadian clicks? Because they're more profitable customers than some guy in India. In fact, it's downright ludicrous to think that Godaddy is racist because they don't supply coupon codes in a way they feel is unprofitable. Last time I checked, Godaddy was a business, not a charity.

Let me remind you that Godaddy releases coupon codes to:
  • Get more domain registrations
  • Get more hosting customers
  • Make the money back on renewal fees
None of those is "make customers all over the world happy." Fact is, Godaddy doesn't view your country as a country where it's profitable to give you a domain at a fraction of its actual cost.

I'm sure Godaddy has done a lot of research on their decision to exclude most countries. With the amount of domain registrations they have, their stats will be pretty conclusive. I think the Godaddy bashing going on here is pretty ridiculous. If you can't use a certain coupon, that's too bad. I bet they still have more coupons that work for you (and better base prices) than most registrars.

There are a lot of issues with geo-coupons. For example if you live in the US and you move to another country Godaddy suddenly will treat you as a lower class customer eventhough your spending habits will be exactly the same.

I'm sure Godaddy can implement a system that if you're not from the US or Canada the coupon system will then check your annual Godaddy spendings. If anually you spend more than the average US or Canadian customer the coupon code should then work for you as well, regardless of your location.

I'm sure Godaddy has a huge amount of customers outside of the USA and Canada that yearly spend thousands of dollars on Godaddy renewals but who are left (mostly) in the cold when it comes to those location-based coupons.

I have never had an issue with coupons here in Australia. Best was 40% off with Groupon deal ofter after Christmas. No issue with both.

UPDATE:
My reply to the OP was because he used the word RACIST, not discriminatory. If he used discriminatory then I wouldn't have responded because Godaddy could be discriminating which customer base it wants to target. Yes. Racist, no. Dont know why this was changed. Most of the replies below it dont really make any sense now.

Racist? HOW can a company be racist if it allows ALL races withing a specific geo-target-marketed area access to a discount?

You know, if they only allowed WHITES (for example) to use the discount code then I'd give that to you but its an absurd remark to make.

Racism - the most overused and diluted term going these days. If someone thinks someone doesnt like them then its racism. I think we need to revisit the dictionary and stop repeating what everyone else is saying out there.

Last, Godaddy is a PRIVATE company. It can do what it wishes. YOU are a customer, you have multiple registrar options. They know this and you should know this too. You are not required nor forced to purchase from Godaddy. Its called marketing. They may want to bolster their customer base from one area and so they open up coupon codes to that area in hopes to gain more customers from that area. Who are YOU to disagree? Wait, you CAN disagree... but call them RACIST? Geez.

These coupon codes dont work for me 75% of the time and at NO TIME have I felt that they're excluding me based on RACE. Based on portfolio size? Maybe. Based on location, probably. Based on past purchases or uses of said coupons or like coupons, most likely. Racist? My God.

Before everyone starts a fight over GD being discriminatory, it's not exactly the correct issue. GD is not forcing me to use the Indian site, it allows me to use the USA site as well where i can apply the coupon codes as well.

But on the US site, it isn't accepting my credit card (International Mastercard). It only accepts it on the Indian site, where these discount codes don't work.

So essentially the options left to me are:
1. Use the USA version of the site with coupon codes, but need a US credit card for that.
2. Use the Indian version of the site without any coupons and pay the full price for .com's, i.e the Indian equivalent of $15.

Effectively implying they aren't providing any coupons for anyone besides US/Canada people.

---------- Post added at 08:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 PM ----------

This might just work for me, if they allow using these credits for paying for domains using the $1-2 promo codes.

Has anyone tried using good as gold to pay for discounted domains?

can you use "good as gold" ?

http://www.godaddy.com/payment/payment-options.aspx

how do they "force" you to use the Indian site?

In order for this to make sense now:

THE OP'S ORIGINAL POST WAS EDITED

THE WORD "RACIST" WAS EDITED OUT AND REPLACED WITH "DISCRIMINATORY"

Asked them about this situation, but they can't give me an answer, only "you are using an expired or restricted code".
I really liked GD, but now it is changing into a piece of "excrement"...

so any company that restricts coupon use is Racist?
Really. that's a big accusation!

I'm not so sure they made such research. If they did they would perhaps issue the codes to individuals, regardless of their place of residence.

Godaddy is a global company, advertising globally, that issues geo-restricted coupon codes. Not a very smart thing. They are alienating global customers.

It's easy to criticize while being on the other side of the wall...

But think about this situation from another view, a company advertising globally is discriminating you only because you are not living in a certain country.
Money paid by americans, canadians, europeans, asians, africans are all the same, even if everybody pays in local currency.
And if you think that there are more customers from USA and Canada than from other countries taken together, then sorry, but you're wrong, technically it's impossible.

Or you think the prices for renewals are different? No, they are the same. But some people pay .99 for registration while others have to pay 12.99$

And yes, this is discrimination!

Have any other opinion, you're free to say it!

There codes aren't meant to be passed around openly on a forum, in the first place. They are given to certain customers after a purchase or as a promotion to get you to buy more things from them. We just happen to have a community that shares these codes, which actually goes against the spirit of the promotion and we're taking advantage of the situation...so nobody has any right to complain. Sorry, but this is reality.

Promo codes can't be personal by default.
You can offer a discount to one certain customer using a customized code that can be used only by an account, but codes that are released in public and work only in certain countries are public.
Such things are inadmissible in a global company.

Just realized that NP is a racist forum.
Why people who are not native English speakers, need to write here not in their own language.

Well there is a name for that, it's called market segmentation. Coupons are a courtesy, not a right. A domain registration costs more than $0.99, so why should godaddy have a duty to sell domains at a loss to domainers just because they don't want to pay retail price.

But if you are a good client, you should probably be able to negotiate a more competitive rate with your account manager, regardless of your location.

I've seen many members on Namepros complaining that there are no more working .99$ codes. Many of them were searching for discounts in the GD promo codes thread and were asking when GD will release new codes? 2.95 is too much, 4.99 is too much, 7.99 is way too much... And now, when they have those .99 codes, I see them speaking like big bosses:D

Stay calm, my friends! Be simple and people will like you.

I just told my opinion, you can disagree but you don't have the rights to judge me!

Peace!

$0.99 codes are too cheap. That's why you are having a hard time locating one.

And you have the so-called right to judge Go Daddy? You did judge them as being so-called racist, after all, even though it's not exactly an accurate word to use.

While it may feel discriminatory that Go Daddy's coupon codes work only for maybe North America-based customers, here's a funny thing: we all have that same ability to discriminate or choose whom to do business with using whatever criteria we want. Heck, you can even choose to do business (or give discounts) only to people who type in their boxers.

Don't believe me? Give that a try sometime, though others may also criticize you for being racist or discriminatory or choosy or whatever.

Oh, and more thing: you might want to take your own advice of "being simple" as well. Whatever that means.

Peace to you, too.

It's called marketing failure. The sole existence of this thread is an acknowledgment of that failure. It has nothing to do with Godaddy having or not having any kind of duty. It's about basic human nature. (the Bible, workers in a vineyard story, that kind of stuff)
Now, I'm waiting for a scientific proof that Godaddy makes more money on a US domainer who transfers out his 1$ domains after 60 days vs an Indian domainer who does the same.*

*Not really, this whole issue doesn't bother me. Only I'm half expecting it, given the eagerness with which some people defend Godaddy's marketing strategy.

That's obviously not true. Try discriminating against people based on the colour of their skin or sexual orientation.

Whats next? The unfair nature of the global marketplace?

How can american domainers compete with Indian domainers with such different tax bases?

Why can I buy a car in the US for 1/2 what it costs on Singapore?

Yawn. Yawn.

You can judge a company by calling them racist but no one can judge you? HOLY COW. You passed JUDGEMENT!

I think I am going to stop here and not waste any more of my time.

Good luck with your endeavors. Hope you find many more 99 cent codes that work. No one is out to get you. Relax, life's short.

Keeping possible legal issues 'local' is reason enough... as international trade agreements, and the anti-competitive clause against importing goods below cost, has been used by other countries to (milk) sue other web giants Google and Microsoft.

Also consider, the Godaddy brand reflects its founder's flag hugging USA patriotism... so US only codes could also be influenced by company politics -in part due to the perceived milking of American web firms abroad.

Pardon? What? Who are you to dictate corporate policy of ANY company? Are you going to tell me how to run my company next?

I think you are quite naive. Have a good day.:O

That's obviously not true. Try discriminating against people based on the colour of their skin or sexual orientation.

If I'm in the U.S. or similar, their laws may not allow me to discriminate in more specific situations like accepting employment or customers. Though I can be wrong, it currently doesn't prevent people from discriminating against - say - assholes, nor does it prevent homeowners from choosing whom to let into their premises.

Heck, you can even discriminate against me from visiting your website or your property if I were there. And I won't hold that against you, knowing that I have that same ability for the most part.

Point is, we can choose - again, for the most part - whom we want to interact with or so for whatever reason without even owing an explanation. One may not like that, though s/he might be thankful if a scenario arises warranting that ability.

Whether it's arguably good or bad depends on what side of the fence one happens to be on, I guess.

You said racist, not discrimination. I dont know who changed your post but I have a screen shot of it because I couldnt believe someone would actually label a COMPANY racist because they were performing market segmentation. Look it up.

I KNOW for a fact that Godaddy caps codes on me. I've hit these walls before myself as well. So, yes, I speak from your side of the wall too. Thats life. Have a good day. May you come across 99 cent codes that work once again soon!
