Hi,
I registered brkne.ws ("breaking news") for 2 years starting today. Any idea what this is worth? I could put feeds/twitters/emails on here, from various sources.
Thanks!
Hi coronatus.
First off, don't worry. When you're first starting off, it takes a while to get the hang of it. In the beginning, we all registered some real lemons. Sorry, but this is a lemon. Don't worry, though.
You'll get better.
For beginners, I would suggest completely ignoring all extensions that aren't .com. This isn't to say that there isn't value to be had in the other TLDs (top level domains) but you stand the best chance of keeping your learning curve more profitable if you stick to .com.
If I could give one piece of advice to beginning domain buyers, it would be stay away from esoterica.
If you have to "explain" why the domain works, it isn't a good domain. Only register domains that are clear, concise and have a purpose. Ideally, the domain should be a search term of some kind.
Go
here and noodle around for a while. On the upper right hand corner of the results, there is a little drop-down menu. Make sure to set that to "exact" if you want to get the most valid results. Check out what people are searching for in the niches you're interested in, then, go to your registrar and see if any of the terms that have higher search volume are available.
Be warned- most of them won't be. Hardcore domainers have been using sophisticated methods to "mine" away all the best search terms, but don't despair. Before you know it, you'll get lucky.
Here's a recent example of my getting lucky.
I'm in Chicago and enjoy sailing. I sail from the Monroe Harbor on the South Shore. One day, I thought it would be cool to own a Monroe Harbor domain, but I knew they would be taken, so I checked, hoping I could maybe get MonroeHarbor.us.
I ran into this...
Not worth much money, but I was thrilled. The previous registrant had bought it in 2000 and let it drop a few months ago. I was the "first one on scene" and wound up getting lucky. We've all had moments like this- diligence is key.
Learn, learn learn. Learn what works and what doesn't. Learn what makes for a good domain and what makes for an awful domain. There's a thread called "Reg Of The Day" in the general discussion forum- check that out and see the kind of names people are registering. You will soon notice a pattern- more knowledgeable domain buyers register a 'certain kind' of domain. Once you recognize this for yourself, you too will have your 'domainer lightbulb moment' and start getting decent stuff.
Good luck!
