I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The moment of truth is soon - I only had 3 picks this week (outside of NOR.ca, which I had no chance of winning) and it really comes down to whether someone (cough RLM cough) sniped me at the end.

So I'll either be very lucky or see my bank account being drained in an auction.

And.... I got jacked, which isn't such a big surprise on a low-end week like this with very few options to begin with, but now I have to wait an extra hour to see how bad the bleeding is...

Even worse, I saw that dot-ca somehow grabbed Flagstone... :shifty::rage::rage::hungover::punch:

You're fired, you're all f-ing fired!!

At least I hope this is just a name change for some servers + PR for WHC, and not that WHC owns them for other clients.

Hoping the same. But I guess we'll know as soon as Siber lets us into our auctions this week...

Not mine either.
It forwards to Vanpeople.com, an Asian site with a lot of Canadian/Vancouver news and ads/links.
Also vansky.com - and you'd think that's where they would've redirected it.

Was it you who got Flagstone on dot-ca?

I was way off my game today, as I had a ton of work to do and I've been busy with a basement reno, and I usually keep an eye on multiple registrars. Damn I'm dead.

I had to go look, with that blind auction system you never know if its yours until you see it in your account. And with them, sometimes it seems to take a day or two to show up, but it was there quickly today. So yes, it seems I bid enough AND got lucky enough that siber/myid didn't get it first. And yeah, 99.9% of the time it is a complete waste of effort on any system other than siber/myid - so when I'm busy - there's no point in going beyond that. But occasionally you get lucky. It was probably only the second domain that was better than TBR dregs that I've picked up there in recent memory.

And TBH, it sounds better than it is as it isn't nearly as popular as you'd think it might be, so be happy that leaves a few more bucks in your pocket for that reno. :)

Confirmed. Siber has added the WHC registrar to their list of existing registrar threads they use in the TBR game. No separate whc tbr ecosystem.

Picked up a couple phrases and the holy grail of steroids lol Also, received a $250 offer on a domain on Godaddy that got an inquiry a week ago on Afternic for price request. Sent him back the price request price, we will see if anything moves from there.

Question/Poll:

This very rarely happens to me, but it does occasionally happen. Now I have to decide, am I going to be a push-over nice guy? Or a hard-ass capitalist? Or something between?

A just acquired TBR received an inquiry from the previous owner who forgot to renew it - blaming godaddy. It is a long time verifiable owner, but the domain was just redirected to their primary domain, which is a similar two-word variation. So it's not critical for them, but it is the one-word base of their 2-word domain they primarily use.

The domain is generic enough and has legit other uses, so they would not win a CDRP, but at the same time, the domain isn't super valuable to me either, with typical but clearly long-term chances of a sale. I'd have normally priced it at $5K, and I have maybe a few hundred dollar investment in it.

I'm just curious how the rest of you would handle this. Would you:

a) set a higher price than you would have since you have a clearly interested party.
b) set the same price you would have anyways and treat this guy like you would anyone else.
c) offer to cut the price in half due to the situation and be happy for the quick flip.
d) sell it at cost plus a very nominal return (say a couple hundred) - just for your time.
e) sell it at cost and be a nice guy.

If it was their primary domain I would cut the price in half. Since they were using it as a redirection, I would keep it at regular price (as they do send out multiple emails about expiring domains) and if you feel nice drop the price a bit.

I'd vote for "d" if it's the usual garden-variety .ca lottery ticket and the person's story rings true.

I've helped mom and pop shops by giving their domain back at cost. I've even helped them restore their website (by recovering as much as possible from archive.org) from a shitty ass developer who ghosted them with no way to access their website and domain (which is how it dropped). I've had people who were still bugging me for help about the domain I gave them back 10 years ago asking for free help again and again. So no-good-deed-goes-unpunished seems to apply.

And in this case, its no mom-and-pop shop, they seem to be a fairly big business, distributing their products across Canada and the US. I'm leaning up a notch to (c) this time...

I totally understand. The good thing, is you owe them nothing, so whatever you choose to do, is fair.

Hand reg'd
My5g

But have come to the conclusion that I will never do anything with it....Still in redemption period... should I drop and get back a few bucks....or hold and hope for a wildcard sale?

What would YOU do? 😉

The problem is, 5g is fleeting. Then it'll be 6g, etc... Was there ever a developed My3G.ca ? Was there a MyLTE.ca? I mean, there's not even a .com in use for anything in that vein that I can find. Sounds like one of those things where at 3am staring at a computer screen in a daze it sounded like a good idea at the time :) You stare at it long enough and it starts to call to you. Been there done that :)

Although, I don't agree that 5g is fleeting...Thank you for confirming what I was thinking about this particular reg. 👍🏻

Tough call, but if you were able to verify that he was the long-term owner, then I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and for karma

So I'd go with "D" or maybe even "E" plus freebies if his business is of interest to you

Or maybe even ask him what other domains he owns and try to get one. I say this because if he's savvy enough to forward a domain to his main site, maybe he owns others.

Did you pick up this name today or last week?

There are enough good .CA's out there that you should be able to stay away from using "my" at the beginning. If you follow the golden rule and stick with terms that would be top 10 or 20% in .COM you'd avoid these honey traps like the plague

I'll take it off your hands at cost. :xf.grin:

Depends a bit on the company and how genuine it feels to me. I would probably (as others already said) go for either c/d) here.

The Rebel promotion ends today if people are looking for .ca hand registrations and have not yet used their 5.

Funny you should mention it. I found a comment on Facebook to one of the CIRA ads from someone who had misread the end of the Rebel promotion to mean that .CA domains are going away ;)

I once sold a domain (that i picked up a a Geo) for $500 because the company forgot to renew it.

If it is 100% verifiable that the company used to own it, then I cut the price down to something I am comfortable with as per the expense + time holding it.

So I took advantage of the Rebel promo at the last second and am trying to update TXT records and nameservers to get the names into some marketplaces.

Is Rebel.ca always...this...slow? And no bulk update option (that I can see) really makes the usual setup steps really painful

Is anyone else having trouble reaching Siber support?

I have always had quick replies and resolutions from them in the past, but after the buyout, I cannot get anything done. I have sent 5-7 emails (including follow-ups) on a couple of different issues and there was not even the generic "we have received your request" auto-reply.

Did WHC fire everyone?
