From my Expirience

I started the Campaign - Wir für Deutschland in 2010 ( we for Germany )
It is a nice Slogan for Politic and Sport

So I registered all 4 versions from Wir für Deutschland.com ( and .de ) net and org

And let me tell you

Bing Google Yahoo ranked all my LandingPages on first page

So domains with hyphens ( - ) rank very well

The reason is simple
The german Olympic team ,,stole,, my idea my campaign 2012
We had a settlement at court
It is still in progress
They got a Trademark - me not

Wir für Deutschland or Wir fuer Deutschland

The Olympic team registered :

wirfürdeutschland.net ( .org )

wir-fuer-deutschland.net (.org )

and only forward them to their Facebook️
They got 150 million Euro from the german Government to join the Olympic Games
These people are parasites

Up until early 2012 exact match domains (including hyphenated domains) ranked well at Google with minimum content. In 2012 Google implemented algorithm changes Penguin and Panda which significantly reduced the impact of EMDs and paid link building practices which were common at the time. Now it is about fresh content and social media profiles. Domains can still be valuable for branding purposes but web developers and small businesses oftentimes are just looking for a $50 or less solution.

What is the Madrid Open example you posted supposed to be telling us? It shouldn't be any surprise that the official website of the tournament shows as the first result regardless of its domain name and extension.

As a general rule, I do not see hyphens being better than non hyphens, yes we know Germans like them. I would never want a portfolio with lots of hyphens ......too risky
