My day job allows me to meet people in all sorts of industries. When possible, I try to identify opportunities to introduce my customers to the nGTLDs.

Thing is, since 2014, I have yet to meet someone in the general public who has a clue on the new G's. From business owners to regular folk. Even people who have owned traditional extensions since the 90s have never heard of them. And every single time that I have opened a discussion geared to new G's and matching their existing brand with an EMD, there has been nothing but positive feedback and a "wow- I had no idea, that is awesome" attitude, along with almost an immediate desire to get regging.

On Wednesday during one of my tours I noticed my customer had his brand stamped onto all of his equipment. He's a DJ, his brand is DJ Verse One. Pretty cool name, actually. Anyhow, here's a skinny transcript of how it went:

HotKey: "I noticed your business name, DJ Verse One. Pretty cool. Do you happen to have a website to go with it?"

Regular Joe: "Yes I do! It is www•djverseone•com. I have owned it since 1999."

HotKey: "Nice! Hey, did you know that there is an actual dot-one extension. You can literally match your entire name without using the "com".

Regular Joe (jaw has dropped): "Your kidding?!"

HotKey: "Nope. In fact, there's hundreds of new dots that have been released. Almost everyone can have domains exactly matching their business name."

Regular Joe: "Do you think GoDaddy has this?"

HotKey: "I'm willing to bet they do, and I'm willing to bet your name is available for registration."

At this point, my customer is beside himself with excitement. I am not kidding. He yells out to his kid to fire up the laptop and go to GoDaddy and search for djverse•one. Amazingly, his kid understood right away; didn't even question the extension and knew exactly what to type. So there the name pops up on their laptop, available.

Regular Joe (shouting to kid): "Put it in the cart, put it in the cart, quick before someone takes it!"

Now the wife walks into the room and wants in on the action. But she's the cautious one. Looking at me dubiously, asks "What's your role in all this?" I proceeded to explain that I invest in names that I believe have a great future, and love connecting people to something that suits them. I also explained I would never dream of purposely infringing on anyones current brand or business. What I do, I said, is take plain ol' dictionary words and combine them with the dot to create a complete name solution.

That put her at ease, and then they wanted to know if I had a website. So I gave them my genuine.domains site, and their kid had an absolute blast persuing through my names. Looks up at me and says "I get it! I get why you called it Genuine Domains!" That seriously put a smile on my face. He continued on my site for the rest of my visit, even discovers his favorite name, Mrs.Fashion. I think this kid's gonna be hooked, he's got a good eye.

It's up to us to plant the seed. The reward will come later..

Actually companies run by just about everyone... not difficult to figure it out... open a magazine.... or better yet... try this cool tool....it;s called Google :xf.eek:. Go to this search bar they have then type in a search string... look at the results. Seems only old schoolers own businesses these days cos almost all the search results have www. in front of them... strange that. :)

True... except soon you will see https:// in front of almost every site on google
I am starting to set my domains to forward from http://www to https:// without the www

I think the url looks cleaner without the www and that is a quick setting in cPanel

Lol... please tell u where you bought ur crystal ball from. We would all like one of those too. I dont know why u wasting your skills on domaining...I mean if I could tell the future like I would have just won the lottery a few times over...

My crystal ball is deeply rooted in my instinct and personal opinion.

HeHe, then again.... you know what Clint Eastwood said about opinions...

Opinions are like a _ _ holes, everybody has one :xf.laugh::xf.laugh::xf.laugh:

Yes, many of my sites also don't have the www ...some do, some dont...

In the future chances are it will be dropped...but like I said initially it will take time until everyone is comfortable with it.

does the general public even know or care about the www. - they just google it and click on it. Does anyone still use the address bar anymore?

Lol.. all our crystal balls are rooted on our own instincts, personal opinions and experiences... this is why I keep tellling everyone to stop arguing about the merits of ngtld's ... the fact that even some people buy then and use them on their sites...means the market exists... how strong the market will become is a mystery... I have no idea and I make no claims to know either... :) It's like body piercings... most people dont like them but some people love them... therefore the market exists...it might be a small market but the market cetainly still exists. .....the end of the day it;s simple... we all need to accept that some people like ngtld's and some people dont... it is what it is..

To add to clint eastwoods statement:

Opinions are like @..holes everybody has one and the only one you should worry about is your own :)

Yes and that is why the entire domaining industry may eventually be unnecessary.

The problem is that the vast gap in different countries when it comes to the public being tech savvy.

I mean often when I give someone my email address over the phone... they still ask me, is that all lowercase? ..... I sit there thinking in my head "DA FCK? what planet are you from??"...lol

Interesting story, thanks for sharing.

I bet they probably think the only difference between new g's and .Com's are just appearance, rude awakening when they find out what's under the hood and you didn't tell them about those differences. And I'm not talking about SEO.

P.s. fails the radio test and causes confusion. 1 or one.
But I like it better than many of the other new g's imo.

I think new g's one day will consolidate and become a thriving NICHE market. URLs have so many other uses than just a pointer to your main website.

keyword 1 keyword 2 dot extension make very little sense.

He probably got it for 99 cents so who cares, but the function of djverse.one is that it is fragmented, and of poor structure.

?

It works well

Just as if a person types in to big G
Dnprices Dnpric.es appears

Although the.appears in the middle the person typing in the website address doesn't have to type the dot

They can just type dj verse one and diverse.one will appear as big G reads the one as er the word one

Great story thank you for sharing. But like some other commenters, I believe he's better served with his .com domain which does not separate the "one" in his name with a dot that becomes confusing, and since he is a DJ the .com will be more than enough and will save him a lot of headache and heartache trying to explain the new domain name. unless and until he becomes YUUUGE as to justify buying the second domain to protect his name, I see it as a waste of time and money. He is a small business who managed to get the .com of his exact domain, why complicate his life with the nGTLD and their problems.

I don't think gtlds will fail long term as if they fail early on they will be bought out of admin etc for $1 buy businesses

Thanks JoeE.

I agree the .com was more than enough, I mean he's had it since 99'. But you and a couple others are mentioning this phantom "confusion" that comes along with new G. Who's the ones getting confused here- not him thats for sure. He got it right away. His kid got it right away. If these people can "get" it, why can;t experienced domainers get it...

Not to complicate life, but life can always use improvements. For example, embed your dot right into your logo, where your logo is the url.

Many people won't care either way. A url is a url, they all ultimately do the same thing. But I'm noticing that once people "see" it, they actually do care, and they want it.

Old ways die hard :)
I bet we will still be seeing www usage 10-20 years from now...

I'll take that bet....
With https becoming the new standard the www will eventually drop.
I have forwarded most of my domains from http://www over to straight https://domain.com.
That cleans up the url a bit and I notice the trend is going there.

Remember there is really no www, you can manually add it or remove it in cPanel. I keep the www forwarding because of old school people who type the www but eventually browsers won't even show www just like a lot of them don't show http:// anymore.

Good article. Socializing new TLDS helps community to understand, in another hand the person having the dot One may not be searchable in the internet, since lack of people awareness on dot One.

I didn't say the nGTLD are confusing for domainers, but as you yourself said in your initial post most people including those who have had domains since the 90s still are not aware of the new ones. That alone tells you that for a small DJ there is no need to get involved in them at this exact moment. He did "get it" and his son did too but why? Because you took the time and explained it to him/them. Imagine the DJ needing to explain this to conduct his business instead of concentrating on what he does best.
The new domains are GREAT and some of them make more sense than even the .com especially when the right/left of the dot come together. But this is not for everyone and for every business at this moment in time.

What does http(s) have to do with a sub-domain? Browsers have to show the www if it's part of the domain, they can't discriminate. The http(s) are just the protocols, whether secured or not.
