Just looking at what extensions seems to be popular, and I decided to do more research on .BZ because it's similar to .BIZ. We all know that .BIZ is very valuable now in the Number and short Letter categories, and perhaps .BZ will follow.

Just looking at the 3N.BZ's, there are less than half left(see attached file).

Again this is speculation, but when half of a range gone, things could go either way. Price isn't cheap, but it's not expensive like .IO.

I am thinking like JB. Domainers are hyping up any extension after another, for no particular reason. Then they move on to the next.
We have had hype threads like these for many years on NP. They are not new. But they don't really make any sense. It's very easy to waste a lot of money in the collective frenzy.
But the registrars are having a good time.

Invest in Domain is a gamble game. Either you win all or lose some.
Actually, investing and gambling are two different things.

I feel the same way, only about different types of hype. I truely feel that for any person to start investing in domains, they either have to have tons of money, or buy into gTLD's or ccTLD's. I personally prefer ccTLD's.
As far as using the term "we", I think that everyone here is part of the "we". I don't think that because a forum user has 2008 or 2009 on their badge that it means anything. For those who have been super successful domaining, I don't think they even come to domain forums like this.

Being a somewhat new member (guest for years watching quietly as my daughter got older), I have seen many older members posting auctions, knowing they are selling their junk. That is more concerning to me than threads where people share information.

I am very careful in my advice, because I never want to see a person lose their money or lose an opportunity.

@Kate , when you put out money buy some thing and hope to get profit back soon or later. That is call investment and once you started in investment it is already take all kind of risks. Which exactly similar like when you put down money play gambling. Both ways are hoping you earn or win money profit :).

Actually, I do agrees with some of you, it is true that sometime we can think serious before we invest into something either worth it or not. However, if you believe in yourself think that will have potential future .. Then just go for it. So yourself wont regret later. At least you did your best.

Kate, you are a wise person. I really like your approach.

I just think that short, 3L, 3N, 4L, 4N, in mostly mature ccTLD's is a pretty safe way to go. Balanced with a minimum of approximately 50% .com domains. That's my strategy. I do own gTLD's also, but they are all within the other 50% of my portfolio.

Anyone can whois some of my domains and see how long I have been buying domains.

In May 2015 I saw how LLL.com, NNN.com and NNNN.com were going up in value fast. So I figured I'd look into LLL.co and NNNN.co (NNN.co was all registered) since it seemed the short strings were getting in demand, and a .co could be an alternative to .com (if you are going by how a domain looks, 866.co is a lot more like 866.com than 866.org or 866.net). Plus some new businesses have been using .co, it is only two letters, China takes well to .cc so why not .co, so in a world where domain extensions have vastly multiplied with new gtlds, .co looks pretty good as a .com alternative compared to everything else. Short .com's are so sky high in value, many have to choose something different. Also I checked Whois on some NNNN.co and did find Chinese owners and Chinese websites. That is my rationale, I'm not asking anyone to debate it or agree/disagree, that's just my decision making at the time.

So back in May I started regging some LLL.co and a lot of NNNN.co, and even some NNNNN.co NNNNNN.co good patterns.
I didn't know what Chips were (the term hadn't even been invented yet) so many of my LLL.co turned out to be non-chips. For numbers I knew enough not to get 4's, and that 8's and double/triple numbers were good. I bought a few here and there between May and October, not seeing any evidence yet of .co picking up in the market, just on a hunch I could hold for up to a year and re-evaluate.

I never expected all the NNNN.co to get bought out before the end of 2015. There were lots available to reg, I should have taken them all. And all the remaining LLL.co too. In hindsight I was doing the right thing, at the time it was pure speculation based on how I saw what the market was doing for short .com's. Now I've been selling some of those <10$ hand regs for $150 to $250. What other class of domains have gone up 15x to 30x since last spring?

So now looking around what is in demand? Short domains. Everyone would love to have short .com's but they are scarce and super expensive. What is a next choice? I would say you want an extension that is short. An extension that is open to anyone to buy and hopefully available at many registrars (and if not registrars can always add new extensions at any time). An extension with a reasonable reg fee (not like some of the premium new gtld reg fees of $100's or $1000's per year). An extension that is easy to type and easy to remember. Maybe an extension that starts with a 'C' because that is how the most popular extension (.COM) starts. People are used to going for the C after they type the dot. Maybe an extension with letters that could be an acronym. .CH can stand for CHINA, or China H------. .CZ could be China Z-----. There are meanings in Pinyin for letters. .BZ could be Beijing Z----. I don't know, but it turns out .XYZ has a meaning in China no one knew about. I'm smart enough to know there are probably meanings I have no idea of! If an extension has a lot of the above going for it, I think it has a chance.

So what could some winning extensions be this year?

.CH
.CZ
.BZ
.IO (already has some traction for start-ups, why not for Chinese start-ups too?)
.SH (for Shanghai, why not? already some Chinese use of .SH, look at 588.sh and 688.sh)

.CH could be such a natural for China. .IO is already known to many in domaining circles. .SH is a flyer for Shanghai, who knows. .CZ and .BZ are maybe the most speculative of all.

At this time it is guesswork and hunches and speculation, just like when I was regging short .CO less than a year ago. I hope it works out like .CO did, but I don't know. I can see one or more of these extensions catching on.

The forum is for discussing ideas like these. I don't see any pumping, I see some optimism, some people who have bought and think it's a good choice. That is what the thread topic is about. I don't go into unrelated threads and hype this stuff.

Very well put.

If chinese investors interest in .cc .. Why not .CH .CZ etc... You must remember .cc is still ccTLD extension and it is same as other ccTLD. It is just the time is not fully coming yet.

Check out the .NU story to see what can happen with domain extensions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.nu

The .NU extension is now run by Sweden's .SE because of it's popularity in Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium. NU means 'now' in Swedish and other related languages.

.NU is/was supposed to be for the island of Niue, which is no where near Sweden but actually near New Zealand. But it caught on in other parts of the world for reasons no one predicted.

A high percentage of Americans think .CA is for California.

Who cares if .CH is Switzerland, as domainers we know that but the average person on the internet doesn't. How many Chinese know or care about the country for .CC? People see .LY and .ME used for domain hacks but probably can't name the countries these extensions are for.

Will .CH be taken over by .CN? No, but it's an open extension as of recently so I can see it getting regged and used in China.

Domainers are hyping up any extension after another, for no particular reason. Then they move on to the next.

I think some domainers here are buying up short domains (which as a category are hot right now) in overlooked extensions that could be promising for market appreciation.

Would it be better to be looking for multiple keyword, long tail .com's left on the unregistered scrap heap?

There are only so many NN, LL, NNN, LLL, NNNN in every extension, and if an extension catches on these shorts ones have become very valuable. Look at one and two character domains, they have value in almost any extension because they are so scarce.

I spend alot of time reading through NP posts from 10 years ago. Funny thing is, this forum has been talking about ccTLD's longer than most members have even been on NP.

Try searching .bz or other ccTLD's and you'll see that these discussions are just the old becoming new again.

There is a new section here on NP for all things China. Under niche discussion section. Check it out.

Although bz is not on the pinyin table and neither is so which has made a few appearances on 4.cn (3L 3N).
bz has a look, but? How long do you go? If at all.
