In this week's Top Topics, one investor asks the community for advice on their first four figure aftermarket domain name purchase, and we discuss whether domain name buying is an addiction.

My First Big Aftermarket Buy. Should I Go For It?

Paying a four or five figure sum for a domain name for the first time can be daunting, since it’s something you’ve never done before, and you may have some reserves about your potential purchase. This week, @Avtar629 has asked for the community’s advice after finding a one-word brandable domain name that’s available to buy for $2,200.

The full details are in the discussion, but opinions on whether the investor should go ahead with the purchase are split. What would your advice be, without knowing what the domain name is?

What Is a Brandable Domain?

Brandable domain names are mentioned daily on domain industry blogs and associated websites, but what exactly is a brandable domain name? After a debate in the NamePros chat room, @JayT outlined what they think a brandable domain name is. Can any domain name be considered to be “brandable”, or is it something more specific?

In an interview last year, I asked Michael Krell of BrandBucket whether he could explain what a brandable domain is. He said: “Generally speaking, a brandable domain is anything a business would call itself. Sometimes it is easier to say what a brandable isn’t”, and then went on to explain what a brandable domain name isn’t. Would you agree with this definition of a brandable domain?

My First Ever Three Figure Sale

“First Ever Sale” discussions are always interesting to me. They provide motivation, and allow the investor in question to receive valuable feedback on the sale from the domaining community. One such discussion that has been popular this week recounts the story of an investor’s first ever three figure sale from a bot-related .COM that @gtldomainer bought via Snapnames just a month ago.

A recent inbound enquiry has now resulted in the sale of this name, with a final sales price around the $600 mark. Congratulations to @gtldomainer on your first three figure sale. At this rate, it won’t be long before your first four figure sale is announced!

Is Buying Domain Names An Addiction?

Can buying domain names become an addiction? In a similar way to gambling in a casino, it seems that many investors register available domains in hope of hitting the jackpot one day. The overwhelming answer to this question, according to the discussion, seems to be that buying domain names can become an addiction.

However, keeping yourself in check by monitoring the domain names you’re purchasing, as well as your monthly profits and losses can ensure that you never go as far as to lose control of your domain purchasing habits.

My Stats Since I Started Domain Investing

There are very few people who openly discuss their finances when it comes to domain investing, and even fewer who will openly admit to how much money they may have lost. Since 2012, @eurorealtor has been investing in domains, and like you’d expect, they have been keeping track of their domain purchases, renewals, sales and expenses.

This frank and open information, which is available in full via the link above, shows exactly how much this investor has spent on domain names, as well as sales and parking revenue. It’s extremely interesting, and a reality check for newer investors.

Bonus:

At last year’s NamesCon event in Las Vegas, GoDaddy’s @Joe Styler interviewed Shane Cultra (@Domain Shane) from DSAD.com. This interview is available to watch below, or via NamePros’ YouTube channel, which also features more highlights from last year's NamesCon.

Speaking of NamesCon, there is going to be a Happy Hour Meetup at the Nine Fine Irishmen bar on January 24th, between 4pm and 6pm.
