Here is an article from Engadget, which contains new information which is apparently quite reliable.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/21/microsoft-portable-to-be-a-totally-integrated-experience/

"The Zune name isn't being kicked around with Microsoft; so as far as we know that's still a project codename, but probably will not be the device's final title. This is no surprise."

As I said many times before... it's just another codename...

Argo --> Zune --> 'Omega' --> 'mPod'

Edit: I just found another article, saying that Zune is the official name: http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/21/technology/microsoft.reut/index.htm?section=cnn_topstories

I'm not sure what to think of this..

I'd tend to trust CNN as a news source over something like Engadget.

Hm... CNN is probably a bit more reliable than Engadget..

Well has MS TMd Zune yet? If not can I make a quick product up and TM it Zune??? With all this talk about zune it would be a shame to let the free advertising go to waste.

Hereโ€™s an official quote from Microsoft "Today we confirmed a new music and entertainment project called Zune. Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year. We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together."

It reads cut and dried to me which is what Iโ€™ve been telling everyone for some time now. These companies donโ€™t register domain names for โ€œCodenameโ€ projects โ€œwhistlerโ€, โ€œblackcombโ€, โ€œlonghornโ€ etc. I never would have made the original post if I werenโ€™t pretty darn sure that this was the final brand and not as some allegedly โ€œin the know claimโ€ a codename.

Best wishes,
Kimmy

What grabs my attention is "project called Zune" and "Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products"

Wouldnt this question the name of the actual microsoft ipod itself? I think so. But what about zunelive.com?

Hmmm.................

MS have practically got zunelive.EXT in every extension possible, seems like zune will stay zune to me

There is no trademark for the Zune brand as of yet. What are the implications of that?

Will zune ever be TM for issue for us. I got myspacezune.com. I wonder how many myspace........coms out there, soon we will have thousands zuners before even the officail Zune come to market.

Just because they have yet to file does not mean it doesn't exist. Read the bottom of this Microsoft Zune is a Trademark.

No, read this and you'll see it's the name "TRADEMARKS.
Microsoft, Zune and the Zune logo are trademarks, or registered trademarks, of Microsoft Corporation in the US and/or other countries."

I don't own any Zune names. I think there's inherent value in a few core names already long gone and just don't see it being worthwhile at this point.

But I'd be curious to know as a point of comparison, how many reported iPod names have sold? Anyone have any idea?

Hello Tom,

While I'm not sure of the number I can state that the Apple Corporation has been very smart with their leniency toward possible copyright infringing by allowing many successful websites with the iPod mark to flourish while continuing to expand the prominence of their products. Letโ€™s just those folks from Redmond see that they and their customers too can benefit from the added exposure and online successes of information and content providers for their products and services. Go Zune!

Best regards,
Kimmy

But who owns ComingZune.com??? very cute animation at home page BTW:)

Its reged to someone at GoDaddy. Not MS.
I mean what makes that official?

Not arguing, I do now think it will be called the Zune. But I'm not sure how official comingzune.com is.

I know what you're getting at. I had a difficult time believing it myself but I doubt anyone would put themselves in such a treacherous position by posing as our Redmond, WA. BFFโ€™s.

Believe it or not it truly appears to be Microsoft and using Godaddy.com whois (DomainsByProxy) protection no less.

if you register a zune domain name your a blatant "cybersquatter" who gives the whole industry a bad image. it's a trademark (global) what dont you understand about that? :imho: what ever happened to ethical domaining?
has anyone a link to domainschool.com?

we should always discourage the registering of trademarks as it sets the domaining industry back 10 years. we dont encourage ppc fraud either :alien:

So if MS has not filed for a TM on zune then what stops someone else from doing so? Like I said earlier. Perhaps I will buy a zune DN, sell my artwork on the website. I can say that I branded my paintings the "zune" paintings. Or some other product that I can quickly come up with.

Get a DBA for Zune. Then file a TM for Zune myself. I mean if MS has not then why can't I beat them to the punch?

Then maybe they will try to buy the TM from me?

Can you sell pre-existing TMs by the way?

zune

I would avoid any zune name. It's such a distictive name and infringing on a TM. If Microsoft don't mind you using a zune domain name then you need an email from MS to say so IMO. Better to start your own brand with your own name than nick someone elses. It's not so difficult. Creature.

there is no way MS will release a product of this magnitude where they dont own the DotCom..... No way ever, impossible, inconceivable, just a no way Jose situation..

My point is this, if MS havent already agreed or already bought Zune.com from that Spanish / UK company then the new name of the product is not Zune..

Come on you guys, youve bought everything else: What is the name of the MS website that will run the Zune product? :| D-:
