Hi, I'm new here and to this whole domain business. I'm planning to buy a domain name but without the www. How do I cancel the www part out? What domain registrars offer that?

Thank you for your help.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
.US domains.US domains
all tld (top level domains) are indeed yourdomain.com with or without the "www" welcome to NamePros :)

weblord, what is a top level domain? Can I get a domain name without the www, even if I register with www? See, I wish to not have the www, like, at all. Not even redirections.

Oh, and I thought some domain registrars do not offer the liberty to not have www in their domains?

denny, maybe to you. But I really think it's cumbersome to the eyes. :p

Thanks for replying, guys.

I thought is someone kidding, probably not
Specify what you mean with the "www":
1. wwwgoogle.com
2. www.google.com

it's up to you to remove "www" on the front of your purchased "yourdomain.com" you can use a free dns host like freedns.afraid.org or zoneedit.com
usually the format/defaults dns entries are:
6 subdomains
domain.com [ add ]
ftp.domain.com Not Yet Configured.
irc.domain.com Not Yet Configured.
mail.domain.com Not Yet Configured.
domain.com URL http://otherdomains.com/
domain.com MX 10:mail.domain.com
www.domain.com URL http://otherdomains.com/ < - just make sure you remove this line

but the obvious disadvantage of doing these settings is when someone types in "www" in front of your domain your site won't show up, so it's best not to remove it.
so even if someone types in their browser "www" or w/o "www" your site is accesible.

Thanks weblord, you're very helpful.

Is there a way for me to do that when someone types my URL with www, it redirects to my domain without www?

Thank you again :)

It dosnt matter,
google.com is the same as www.google.com

You can just tell people to not type in the www. if you want

Basically a domain is always registered without "www". "www" is just a - more or less - standarised type of name for a subdomain. At the end it comes down how you configure your nameservers, you could name it also MYGREATHOSTNAMEFORMYWEBSITE.yourdomain.com. If you dont create a "www" entry but assign an DNS A entry with the right IP address directly to your domain, it will be also directly accessible.

Just edit the dns zones in the domain control panel...

WWW. doesnt have to be typed.. in the early days of the web it was geared to help resolve in different countries.

If you really don't want people to use www you can use this code (place it into .htaccess on your host)

Code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

or to make users goto www.yourdomain.tld:

Code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

does SEO work in reverse? Currently I have my site redirecting to the non www version. It was setup this way, I think WordPress MU may require this since each user gets their own subdomain, but I'm not certain. I changed it to make it a 301 redirect, but the www redirects to domain.com. Should I attempt to switch it, or doesn't it matter? Either way the search engines are being directed to one version...

wwwgoogle.com

is a type of typo squatting . . .

www.google.com

the www is really just a subdomain . .. like john.google.com . . . but most people redirect to the main domain google.com

I don't think it matters which way you make it go. Having both the www. and without it doesn't really hurt either.
