I just had this thought yesterday, would we ever run out of new and interesting designs or would there be some Web X.0 to save us everytime around. There was a very stereotype 90s... you could not tell the difference between different websites and almost all of them had this tracker and funky pointers..
Then came the era of templates! And more or less every possible design could be found there. And finally the web 2.0 that made web designs more subtle and un cluttered.... but now every other website seems to be web 2.0 ... what would happen next?
