So what are your preferences? Would you rather create a blogging site using something like Wordpress or Blogger, or would you rather use a portal site with something like PHP-Nuke?

Are article sites just too "standard" these days where we need more than a blog?

The main differences are that Nuke has a lot more things it can use whereas WordPress just has a blog entry and a menu. In my opinion Nuke is quite busy and I have never truly found a site that uses it that has looked good. WordPress on the other hand has plenty of sites that look clean and good.

Go with WordPress, if you are in dire need of a CMS, don't use Nuke. You can even convert WordPress into a CMS with little effort.

If you need a blog on your site, then use Wordpress.
If you need more functionality, I would rather use Joomla or Drupal as CMS.

What are some steps to turning Wordpress from more of a blog software into a CMS one?

I would go for a cms. You can always do blog with cms, drupal is my choice. :)

For a simple blog I would go for Wordpress. For more functionality, blog CMS is better.

I would suggest Joomla followed by Drupal. I have faced a few problems with Nuke. Whether you should use a Blog or a CMS, depends completely on your need and objectivs. I would say a CMS is just a bit more SEO friendly if applied rightly.

To be honest I have a small dislike on phpnuke, since I tried to learn it and didn't go that well, since there are to many functions and features on it! I did however go with joomla, also not easy at all, but somehow just felt right, and now I happen to use it from time to time.

I have learned wordpress aswell, as a client once needed it. I just started my own weblog through wordpress and I notice, with or without plugins that are really easy and fantastic!, you can use wordpress for a whole site, easily! But I have heard that if you have alot of pages and use wordpress as your system, it slows it down alot! Haven't tried it myself, so don't quote me on this.

Also what I think you should do is, learn both a CMS, like joomla, drupal or whatever AND a blogging software like Wordpress. This way you can never go wrong.

Use a CMS for sites that really need all the extra's and hard coded features, and use wordpress for sites that have like a few static pages and some news and perhaps even an image gallery and done! I wouldn't use wordpress on sites that you plan to make really big in size ( number of pages ).

Depends what your site is. If you run a site with alot of pages, and plan on making it bigger, put everything on a really great cms like joomla.

But if you just need some extra features that most cms' have, then there is a plugin for Wordpress, that turns wordpress into a cms! Haven't used it myself, but as far as I have heard, it's really helpfull! To be honest, even going to try it myself the coming weeks! I will let you lot know how it went!

I don't have the link right here, but I think a google for Wordpress CMS would do alot of good!

Good luck all with your blog/website!
