It's recognized by the older generation as a Very old acronym for just the Telephone Number. Even way prior to the Internet.
TEL. 886765490etc . is something you would see on all paper advertising from billboards to business cards and it is still used as such today. Very hard to re-invent the wheel for this three letter extension.

Agree and lately so many keywords that would get a good price in .co or .io have dropped without any interest.
