A few times i noticed a domain has gone to pending delete but expired like 5 months ago. I seen one recently and it was registered with ENOM, and now it's ready to be backordered. How is that possible?

I recently had a similar experience with a domain registered with Godaddy. I contacted support and the response was that, after approximately 42 days of expiration (when it is supposed to drop, the registry may or may not release the domain.

Drops occur after 75-80 days not after 42 days. That's the time GoDaddy drop it from their register and pass it back to the Registry. For .com at Godaddy, 42+30+6=78, it drops on day 78.

I understand the 75-80 day period. But I'm talking about a domain that expired in April, and now it is pending delete. The registrar is ENOM. So i'm just wondering what happened for 2 months after the 75-80 day period? Can registrars just hold onto domains for 4-5 months?

I was watching another domain last month, and it said it was going to Pre-Release sometime around August 21. But then I think the owner reclaimed it back. But why would it go to a pre-release auction like 4 1/2 months after the expiry?

This is the registrar whois output, not the registry whois. This name was probably not renewed by the holder, Enom kept the domain.
In order to confuse domain holders, Enom have invented the 'extended RGP status' which does not exist... it's their way of saying "you did not renew the domain, so we are keeping it and we might allow you to redeem it if we are in the mood and it doesn't sell in the meantime of course".

Technically, the name is in good standing with Verisign.

No actually, that date 2011-07-25 was the day the domain disappeared off NameJet's list of domains available soon (for Pre-Release). The domain was CruisesToGo.com and I was watching it. I thought it was weird for it to have a Pre-Release in the last week of August. So this "extended RGP status" is probably what took effect then.

I have checked whois history and Registrar Status of the domain.

This domain was not expired and until 2012-04-25.

lastest updated from Registrar Status in 2011-08-15 (pendingDelete)

domain was dropped in 19-aug-2011(re-registerd again)

domain was first reged since 1999 with Registrar TUCOWS.(Update Date:
2009-06-05 00:00:00)

there are only two reasons why domain was pendingDelete:

  • the previous owner requested the name to be deleted by mistaken.
  • hacker requested the name to be deleted from previous owner's account.

I have confirmed with ENOM official.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Technical Support. We have checked the registration records of the domain name .

It appears the previous owner requested the name to be deleted and we complied with their request to delete this domain name from our system.

Sincerely,
