Why hasn't .WS taken off?

I've really started liking this extension lately, and seems to me that the memory power of "Dot Web Site" is a winner (I know, that's not what it stands for, but come on it's pretty natural).

I've started searching, and quite a few great names are available. Obviously development is the key to all extensions as -db- has pointed out in severeal threads. Is it that not many people develop? and it's easier just to collect names and park 'em?

I've seen several members here that specialize in one extension, but I don't recall anyone specializing in .ws :-/

Any thoughts?

.ws is the kind of extension that anything could happen with, a couple of years done the line, you could see huge profit on your domains, or the whole market could collapse....

The price isn't much different from .COMs.. (except 1/2/3 char .ws domains)
$7.99 at Domainsite.com and $9.99 at Godaddy.com

.ws

I like any extension I own, as long as it sells for me!! I have 3 .ws. Don't care what they say about it, or other .ext's, as long as it sells!!!!

I have three fairly decent .WS names that I have kept as a hedge, in case the ext does ever take off. Additionally, I sold 4 or 5 that I owned, a year or so back- bought at the time, I believe, for 10.95 and sold for $30 +/-.

That being said, there are a few reasons why I think the ext has not progressed. For openers, when it first came on the scene, "website" and "worldsite" were touted as the meaning for "WS" and WSamoa was hardly mentioned in any of the promotional material, which attached an air of deceit to the ext, early on, that may have had a carry over effect. GoDaddy, who, at the beginning, was the primary registrar marketing .WS had adds w/ big bold fonts establishing .WS as "Website" and *no* mention of WSamoa, whatsoever, in their emails.

Another negative, and I don't know if this has changed, was that there was an air of cheesiness attached to the cctld caused in part by the registrie's main website. I remember going to the "about us" and seeing two Orange County/San Diego County "swingers" , standing next to a Ferrari or, (some similar sportscar), w/ gold chains around their necks which was bothersome relative to the legitimacy of the marketing behind the cctld's registry.

Finally, as w/ all cctld's that are used to fabricate a meaning, (w/ the exception of .TV, IMO) there is a large and high profile group of naysayers- even larger and louder than, say, the anti-.biz group, that has been a strong force in detracting from the quality, legitimacy and potential of the namespace.

No arguments here. Those WebSite.ws ads are cheeeeeeesola and they seem to be getter worse. They have to fire the person in charge of those ridiculous flash movies. The person in charge of branding needs to go as well. All that cheesiness is contributing to the TLD's stunted growth.

I'm not sure I follow that as a reason. Is WSamoa a problem?

.ws is very tempting with some powerful keyword names at very affordable prices. Given that search engines treat them the same, developed with good content could yield some great results.

I have a few, one I recently bought because I have an affiliate program to build around it and the exact keyword domain was available.

I also like the .ws extension. It's easy to remember. I agree with above comments about marketing the extension. It needs a professional marketing image and an identity make-over.

Why are people against tld's at all, its the extension at the end of a domain, every one that comes out gives us more choice...why bash a tld is just stupidness IMO

No. .WS is open to all, just as the .CC & .TV ccTLD are. No restrictions, and they work just as well as .COM names. If developed, you won't have any problems with email, hosting or search engine optimization.

.COM domain holders will bash the emerging ccTLD because they want to keep the value of their .COM names as high as possible.

ws is too vague. Better alternative TLD are info or biz. auction.ws or auction.biz? Which one is more to-the-point? auction.ws or auction.info?

As a personal preference, I would rank auction.ws the same as auction.biz. Furthermore, I would rank auction.ws above auction.info.
