Why do most expired domains on GoDaddy Auction seem to be extended for another year? Are the current registrars extending them for auction?

If someone buys that domain through the auction the expiry will have the one year extended. If none bought it they will cancel it and let it expire.

The domain hasn't been bought at auction yet. The ICANN lookup shows that it has been renewed, but other WHOIS lookups indicate that it has expired.

Make sure it's actually been renewed as the system (on many popular TLDs) just puts in a +1 year expiry date during the period after expiry and before final deletion. It's standard procedure under the current system.

Look at the ICANN codes to figure out if it's been renewed and not the date.

Same domain. Which one is correct?

They both are and both have the "autoRenewPeriod" flag which means no renewal has yet been performed.

Once it's officially renewed it will display "ok".

As for the expiry dates, as I stated before, ICANN temporarily sets a +1 year flag on domains under the new system (until they are officially deleted). DomainTools isn't a registrar so they don't.

It used to be (and I assume still is?) that registrars renew every name for a year to allow it to go through the whole expiry/delete phase. If the name isn't renewed by the original registrant, sold at expiry auction or sold at close out its dropped and the registrar is reimbursed the years renewal by the registry.

View the original renewal as a kind of "sale or return" with the registry.
