I am having major problems w/java, maybe you guys can help me out. For the past year, i haven't been able to run any sun java related program. I uninstall, and reinstall java over and over and over, but nothing works. When i try to run any java app, nothing happens. When i try to run java apps on a website, the website just sits there blank and stalls.

I'm really interested in trying Aptana for web dev...but since it's a java app, i can't even start it up. I've considering just wiping out my system, and reinstalling windows xp, but i've got sooooo much stuff on my system, i dont' want to spend a month getting everything back up and running.

Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated!

A couple of basics first:

1. What operating system and version number? EDIT: never mind; I reread and saw that it's WinXP. Still, run step 2 below.

2. In a terminal window, type java -version and hit enter. What gets printed out? By way of example, here's what mine says:

java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)

I'll try installing Aptana to see what it does.

Once I see how to launch it (e.g. a jar or whatever) I'll post back with some recommendations.

Specifically, try launching it from the command line with the -ea and -esa flags to see if the code prints out any load/assertion messages. It might be something as simple as a missing CLASSPATH environment variable.

edit: based on the fact that you can indeed launch the java interpreter, I don't think there's a problem with the binaries or some other obscure issue like a hardware compatibility problem.

fixed it

fixed the problem - woo hoo!

i guess i installed the latest version of java w/out uninstalling the previous one. :td:

so, i uninstalled the old version of java, and i tried to uninstall the latest, but the uninstall prgram would just hang and do nothing

so, i manually deleted the directory, and then deleted anything in regedit in a java/ folder

i was able to reinstall java and it almost worked. I was able to run java apps on my computer, but any java app on the web would just hang.

so i uninstalled java, and then reinstalled it again...and then it worked!

:yell:

Ah, good job. I installed the app (very nice; need to see if they have a php editing module somewhere), and it ran fine. Couldn't launch the jar -- had to use the binary front end, and seeing as I'm on a Mac, there was no way for me to investigate the Windows version.

Glad it worked out.
