A non-Java chatroom possible?

Is there any way we can dump the Java chatroom? Excuse my language, but goddamn that thing is annoying. It does nothing but lag for me, I can type an entire sentance and it will still be typing the rest of it out like half a minute after I finished typing it. It also makes me look like one of those English idiots that doesn't know when to capitolize letters and when not to, because I hit my caps lock key and it applies it to different letters because it has so much lag.

Now, I know some of you will say "oh it must be your computer" or "your internet connection is really slow" or even "you must be running a really old version of Java."
1. I have about the nicest damn computer setup possible right now. AMD 3700+, 2GB of RAM, etc. - obviously the lagging isn't my problem. I mean, yeah, it's on my computer but it doesn't mean it's my computer's fault.
2) I have a nice 3mbps connection, and I don't think the speed of my connection would even have anything to do with the fact that the Java likes to lag out so much.
3) I have the newest version of Java. I just tried updating it but I couldn't, because: "you're already running the newest version!" Imagine that.

So yeah, I don't know what the problem is, but for now I'm blaming the authors of Java. Is anyone else here having horrible problems with lag that you normally don't experience anywhere else? This is the only website on the internet I visit that uses Java that is nothing but lag for me. I don't know if it's the Java or the chat script, but something is lagging.

It gets annoying looking like an idiot that mis-capitalizes everything, it's also annoying trying to talk and waiting for the Java to respond to the keystrokes you entered like 5 seconds ago.

Is there any way NamePros could offer a more traditional form of chatting, such as IRC? There are free IRC hosts out there in case it's a violation of your host to host one. I know this chat room is all nice and integrated with the forum and stuff, but think about the select minority of users here (like me) that can't even chat in the first place because of reasons unknown relating to Java.

Just a suggestion. IRC, no?
:/

I'm not sure why it lags for you..It works ok for me and I have a much slower computer and internet connection than you. Possibly another program you're running it conflicting?

Well personally I would say my situation is even worse than yours, as I cannot get the chatroom or any Java app for that matter to run on my computer, without my browser crashing. It used to work fine, and I haven't installed any new software since it worked, but now all of a sudden any browser I try closes when I try to open up anything Java. Its quite frustrating despite doing everything possible to fix it. I would definitely support a non-Java chatroom...

That's exactly how it was on my old PC. I couldn't even enter the chatroom, despite the fact that I had Java installed and everything. I don't know what the deal is. I think NamePros should have a chatroom that everyone can use, not only limited people that seem to have a bit of luck. I don't know why I'm one of the unlucky ones - my specs and everything are up to date and fine. :|

I understand your frustrations. The lag and caps lock thing gets me too sometimes when I'm using Firefox and my resources are maxed out on my four year old computer. Still, the great majority of the time I'm able to use the chat room without any lag.

I'm not blaming your computer either. The specs are adequate by far to be able to handle the java applet (well beyond my own). But there may be an incompatability somewhere.

The Java version I would check first. Is http://www.javatester.org/version.html reporting version 1.5+ of Java? It is possible to have two versions of Java installed on your computer, and you can even switch back and forth between them.

See http://www.java.com/en/download/help/switchvm.xml

If you want to try the Microsoft Java environment, you can download it here: http://www.meetingworks.com/files/msjavx86.exe

I appreciate the suggestion of IRC, but unfotuantely we are pretty much married to the current chat room system. IRC has a few benefits, but also some downsides. We've tried it before with mixed results.
