Why 4 letters dot com on godaddy auctions go above 100-500 easily while namepros not much?

I see a few here on namepros at 180-400 buy now and auctions below these values. While looking on expired domains or other auctions like godaddy, namecheap, it seems to have no domains of 4 letters at these prices.

I guess the expert will respond to that.

NP mem tend to want to buy all 4L domain names at reseller prices, even for strong ones.

Last week, someone bid a higher amount in my atom auction but later came back to NP to offer me a lower price privately...I decided to change my username for the Atom auction.

The biggest issue is that Gdaddy & Ncheap no longer accept auctions from sellers except for "registrars" with expired domains which seems to "benefit them".

Everything feels strange. If you're tired of holding onto such names or maybe when owners are in need...

There are moments when 1 cent seems like 1 million. I guess

Do you know what means registrars? I wonder why they did that? So they can sell only their inventory, therefore less inventory meaning higher price?

I understand that eyeballs on auctions are valuable but I didnโ€™t expect people to pay a premium for being godaddy. So seems np pricing should be below godaddy and other auctions.

Very interesting about your atom client. I guess was not an end customer.

A majority of domains I sold on NamePros to investors/resellers over the years were resold on other platforms to end users for 400%+ markups.

Keep in mind, most the members of NamePros are looking for reseller/wholesale pricing so they can make a profit reselling it. Granted, there are also end-users on NamePros just looking to get the best deal they can without having to pay an increased aftermarket price.

Sometimes, both are one and the same and serial entrepreneurs with multiple revenue streams that they also resell later, once the stream slows down or they pivot into a different niche.

I actually shared an example the other day, which I'll quote here for perspective:
Ok, here's an example of one I under sold in a batch deal, which fits better as an example of what you may be wanting to see.

Example of a domain being resold again after i sold it:
  • I sold Alarmable (.com) back in 2012 in a package deal of 8 domains. The winning bid was $26 ($26 divided by 8 = $3.25 for the domain)
  • NameBio shows Alarmable (.com) resold in 2013 for $467
  • Today, Alarmable (.com) is a Godaddy parked page
  • WayBack Machine shows that since I sold it in 2012 it's been a lander or parked page
The moral of that story is that the winner of that auction flipped the $3.25 domain they got from me (Bulk average cost break-down) for $467 a year later, making a $464.75 profit (Minus 1 renewal cost).

Not too bad for the winner, huh? Looks like that was @domenfx (That was your reported sale on NameBio right?)

I'm not even going to ask what you profited on the other 7 domains in the 8 domain batch. But then, it was so long ago, you may not remember the sale prices or the other domains since I edited them back out of the list back then once sold.

The same principle of buy low and sell high can be applied to 4-letter domains or any other niche for that matter.

So basically itโ€™s a good place to buy low?

Why did you sell 8 at 26usd? I canโ€™t understand why so cheap. You need money? You didnโ€™t need money? You didnโ€™t want to pay for renewal? Iโ€™m trying to understand whatโ€™s the reason of selling so cheap.

Any other places youโ€™d recommend as here the inventory is low.

(Iโ€™m mostly a buyer, but got some inventory to sell, but I guess to end users)

That was back in 2012 and I registered the domain with a $0.99 cent first year promotion code. So, technically, I made a $2.26 profit per domain x 8 domains = $18.08 total profit for the package deal.

Back then I managed a huge portfolio, dealt in bulk deal + single sales and played the quick flip game with promo codes. It allowed me to generate anywhere from $45 to $250 per day average each year for the few years I played the quick-flip game.

I got tired of all the work required to manage a large portfolio like that with daily listing, removals, updates, transfers, optimizations, etc... and pivoted to a different business model.

At the time though, it made sense and taught me a lot.

Registrars still have promo codes in various extensions and some members still play the quick-flip game.

For perspective, here's some current promos for less than a buck registration costs: https://www.namepros.com/threads/ev...register-with-a-1-budget-here-you-go.1363579/

I didnโ€™t thought could make so much money. So you were able to sell like what % of your 0.99usd domains?

But now I doubt would be many .com worth to register new, or Iโ€™m wrong? Do you think could still be done this quick churning?

I sold 100% of all the promo domains I registered.

Now days, as seen at the link I provided above, you can register domains in newer gTLD's for as little as $0.19 for the first year and various registrars offer promotions.

The quick-flip game will always be viable as long as their are registration promotions under a buck.

Of course, not all domains are created equal and you may not be able to sell them all. The good news, is that with a $0.19 to $0.99 investment, you won't lose as much as standard registration costs. (Bulk batches allowed me to sell at 100%, tossing in a few that didn't sell prior mixed with 1 or 2 better domains that garnered more interest)

It can help with low risk learning. If you're new to this and looking to get your feet wet practicing and trying to hammer out and identify a sweet spot that works for you, the promotions help reduce your potential loses as you learn.

Once you start getting better at it, you can pivot to higher risk domain investments with bigger acquisition costs.

That's just my opinion anyways. everyone does it differently.

What ever you decide to do, i wish you luck.

It was not like this few years ago. The wholesale value of 4Ls declined over the years. In the past Chinese investors heavily invested in 4Ls as liquid assets, which increased their wholesale value. But about 5 years ago a sort of bubble burst effect happened.

Before 2020 it was so easy to win 4Ls in auction at Godaddy, NameJet and Flippa and then flip them at NamePros for profit. Which I did back then with high sucess rate, in some cases 100% profit or more, in one case I got a 4L from NameJet at $150 and after 24 hours I sold it at NP for $250.

That quick flipping does not work anymore, the competition in Godaddy and other auctions is too high and the demand on NamePros is low. Maybe that also explains why 4Ls sell at higher price at Godaddy auctions.

It was not like this few years ago. For some reason NP members are not
The tide shifts sometimes, where its mostly resellers looking for wholesale, then a wave of aftermarket buyers comes in, followed by tire kickers, then a wave crashes in with end users looking to develop a real world brand name, followed by resellers looking for wholesale again, then some brick-n-mortar brands find matching domains here to buy to expand online, then back to tire kickers again, Etc..

The time of year, holidays, VC peaks. Etc. Also play into it.

Up and down, round and round it goes, where it stops, nobody knows. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for your insight. You think traffic on name pros decreased or just godaddy auction boomed?

Where do you think are the best places to buy cheapest 4 letter domains right now?

In 2025, you can sometimes still find 4-letter .com's at the current market floor value in the $90 to $135 range on NamePros when someone is needing to liquidate for fast cash to pay some upcoming bills they didn't anticipate having.

It's rare to find them elsewhere at that price-point (Sometimes eBay, but not as often as on NamePros)

in 2023 I scored a few batches for $50 to $80 each (Per 4-letter .com) and then quick flipped them all within 4 months of acquisition. It was only a $497 profit for me in that short amount of time, but still a profit.

VIPs, Pros and Gold members can see the break-down and number crunching from acquisition to resale of that leveraging a 0%apy for 12-month credit card promotion as the investment capital (Just to test and see how it would play out) here: https://www.namepros.com/threads/domain-investment-capital-options.1293107/post-8884684

GD traffic has always been high no change. Regarding Namepros, the traffic seems ok but the marketplace section is less active than before.

I stopped buying 4Ls few years ago, so I can't give an advice on best place to buy 4Ls. But I still believe NamePros is the place where you can buy cheapest 4Ls, you can try the request section and open a request for buying 4Ls at specific budget you want, some domainers need fast cash so you may be able to get some good deals.

GoDaddy Auctions reach more buyers, which often pushes prices higher than on niche forums like NamePros.

4L .coms once again dominated, generating over $10M in escrow sales, nearly 70% of the total escrow.com volume for the quarter.
