I was looking at whois.cn a few weeks ago and saw it wasn't registered. I tried registering it for the hell of it but it wouldn't go through. I looked at a few days later and I saw it was unavailable.

Was it on backorder or some type of reserver list? Or was there some type of error in it not being shown as registered?

Just check the whois, it will tell you "Sorry, The domain you requested is in the reserved list"

Thats the thing, it didn't say that :P I actually got as far as payment through paypal and then it displayed an error and a few days later my payment was refunded :P

I tried through dotster.com and namecheap.com both giving me the same errors. Its gone now, i'm just curious as to why I couldn't register it then !

You need check whois through webnic or key-system etc. There is different between NeuStar Registry and CNNIC.

As you said, dotster.com is just a Registrar of NeuStar Registry, not a Registrar of CNNIC.
