WHOIS server that allows automated queries?

I'm building a small tool (not a WHOIS tool) that requires information from the WHOIS (if the domain is availiable). I don't want to use anyone else's source, so don't link me to free WHOIS scripts.

Does anyone know any WHOIS websites that allow automated queries? (e.g. coming from a script?)

I've tried a whole bunch, but when I print the result of the file_get_contents() function, it shows the WHOIS site giving an error telling me that they don't allow automated queries.

just write a script that uses the whois on your own hosting server
