Are there any rules to running whois privacy services? Rather than paying per domain for private registration, is there any reason I can't set up a P.O. box, a voicemail box, and a contact form on one of my own domains to use as my own personal anonymous whois service?

Nope.

You can do it, but you're going to have to be responsible for passing communications on to the actual registrant.

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I will be the only actual registrant. I don't plan to provide a service to anyone else, I just want to anonymize my own domains.

If somebody writes snail mail to you and it bounces or if some tries to call you and it's a wrong number, they can complain to your registrar about false whois info. Depending on your registra.r would depend on how they treated the complaint.

many registrars delete domains for providing false whois info if they cannot contact the domain owner to get the information corrected. Keep in mind when you register a domain you agree to both the registrar terms of service as well as the registries and both of those terms state you have to maintain an accurate and correct whois record at all times.
