Hi everyone, I’m Harry, a small business owner working on building my online presence. I’m in the process of choosing a domain name and I’m stuck between .com, .us, and .org.

I know .com is popular and trusted, but sometimes it’s hard to get the exact name I want. I’ve seen businesses using .us for a more local feel, and .org seems professional in some cases too.

From your experience, which TLD would be the best choice for a small business website that wants to look credible and trustworthy?

Tech Support & IT Services for SMBs
I'd be considering .com .net or your country code.

Many people on here would tell you not to touch .net with a bargepole, but if the .com is unavailable, then I'd have no worries using a .net for something like this. It's one of the originals, and one of few extensions where if you quote it, people know it's not .com and is an extension in its own right. And it totally suits IT.
But check you're not treading on anybody's toes in the same field trademark wise.

If I were only providing services in the US, then .us might be a third option.

Just my opinion, hopefully others will share theirs..

Good luck (y)

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply, that really clears things up for me. I was leaning toward .com just for credibility, but it’s good to know .net is still a solid option, especially for anything IT-related.

I hadn’t really thought much about .us but since I’m mainly focused on the US market, that might also make sense.

Appreciate the reminder on trademarks too

I’ll definitely double-check that before deciding.

Has .us become more popular and visable in the United States?

I remember in older discussions people mentioned that most Americans are more accustomed to .com than .us.

That said, .us has potential, for sure!

Location of your audience matters.

In many parts of the world, the legacy extensions are going to look the most credible and trustworthy: .com, .net, .org, etc.

In some parts of the world, like Germany, then .de is going to look credible and trustworthy.

When possible, .com.

However, any well known extension works with a strong enough term really.

Not just in Germany, although the popularity of .de is extremely overwhelming.

However, in Belgium (.be), Netherlands (.nl), UK (.uk and .co.uk), Czech Republic (.cz), and several other European countries, the local ccTLD is at least equally popular (or more popular) as the legacy extentions. Really depends on the country.

I'm not sure how popular .us is in the United States, the domain does have potential obviously but I'm not sure if it is catching up with .com or not.

.US usage in the US is negligible. I've personally only seen one in the wild. I've seen a few more online, but only a handful total.

Sending emails to Outlook through. us will be treated as spam and configured in a timely manner, while. com will not.

Also here in Finland, .fi is the default, and if you use .com, your brand name practically needs to include the extension (excepting multinational corporations). I can only think of one local business that uses .eu (comparable to .us?)

Yeah, .com is still king for most folks here, but I’ve definitely seen .us pop up more in the last few years. It’s got potential, especially if you’re targeting a very U.S.-specific audience. I’ve been digging into domains lately myself since I’m working on a new business, and honestly .us feels cleaner now than it used to.

Exactly this — it really comes down to who you’re trying to reach. If your audience is mostly in the U.S., they’ll expect .com first. But in places like Germany, people instantly trust .de more. I’ve been looking at this a lot lately while planning my own business site, and it’s clear the local extension carries weight in certain markets.

I have sold a lot of .US domains to end users.

I will go through one day and see what sales have been developed.

That'd be an interesting post or article.

If you decide to make it an article, we'd love to have it on our blog:

Something to consider. :)

I mainly know .us from site such as delicio.us, rollermail.us, webmail.us, zoom.us, ...

Not that many indeed, but then I'm in Europe. I would assume in the USA local businesses or websites aiming only at a local audience would use .us more frequently.

The extention would be great for domain hacks (.likes.us, .loves.us, etc) but I assume that market has already been explored?

Other than that, I still believe .us has a lot of potential. It's a pity foreigners cannot register it.

Comparing .eu to .us makes somewhat sense but not entirely. I do see websites regularly with .eu suffix, and advertisements that include websites with .eu suffix. It's still not overwhelmingly popular here, but .eu is growing step by step. I personally like the extention a lot.
