Which of the new gTLDs will survive?

To me, many of the new gTLDs don't work, whether it be logically, aesthetically or phonetically - and some are just plain ridiculous.

Then you have the hypothetical situation where 'iam.cool' might work, but it'll go if .cool gets shut down through lack of takeup on the extension.

A few new gTLDs are getting lots of registrations, but is this by end users or hopeful domainers? How many big companies are using them as their main address on the net?

If there's a need for viable alternatives (or for any other reason), which will survive and which are doomed to fail?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Most tlds will survive. The cost of maintaining a tld (no marketing) isn't really that big, thus even tlds that don't make a lot of sense or don't have tens of thousands of registrations can still survive. Also, the bigger you are (as a registry) the easier it is to manage tlds and cut costs. In the end, some failing tlds owned by small registries will go to bigger ones.

Regarding registration numbers, yes, the millions of registrations you see in extensions like .xyz, .top , .loan, .win are mostly by investors, speculators.

End-user adoption of new gtlds is happening (very) slow but it's happening. I don't expect any radical changes in the next few years regarding adoption unless a lot of money gets spent in marketing. There are many companies using new gtld domains (even billion dollar companies) but that number is still way smaller compared to the number of companies using .com so most people don't see new gtld domains in their everyday life yet.

I too think that most will survive. However they will live on as zombies like .mobi .tel .asia today, that is total irrelevance. Even with say 100K defensive registration a TLD can be 'profitable'. But nothing more.

But I think that some TLD operators have deliberately banked on defensive regs to get $$$, or even blackmail - consider the dubious practices of .sucks for example.

If new extensions were wiped out and the DNS restored to pre-2013 configuration, who would notice or bother ? Domainers ? TM holders ?

I think .blog will be popular with endusers, and survive, and be profitable, but not so much with domainers because resale will be low, because bloggers are ____. fill in the blank

If operating a string is free then why did Uniregistry decide to sharply increase the renewal cost of many strings under its management? Now that the new extension bubble has burst and six million registrations have dropped over the last several months what will the ongoing revenue stream be? If Uniregistry were to take on a losing streak what would they do to renewal rates?

The only stat that surprises me is that only 66% are operating at a loss.

.live will survive because it is LIVE :xf.smile:
.news will survive or else it will be a NEWS :xf.smile:
.ninja will survive because a NINJA always survives :xf.smile:
.equipment will survive because you need EQUIPMENT for survival :xf.smile:
All of the above will survive because I own at least one domain in them :singing::whistle:

if I had a name that was in danger of being mothballed by the registry, I would change its nameservers and contact emails to use a secure domain that I own (and won't be selling).

[email protected] , [email protected]
ns1 and ns2.example.com

in case the existing domains are left alive, but changes are not accepted.

.VIP, .SHOP, .BLOG will survive from my point of view.
.SHOP will grow soon in the future with shop online.
.VIP is loved so much by China and Asia. it gets 75% of renewal rate after the 1st year.
.BLOG is famous for many of bloggers.

i believe in .TICKETS
- due to the huge range of markets involved (from public transport to travel to sports to concerts, theatres and what not) and increase of the share of online ticketing in developing markets

There is a difference between surviving and taking off.

The price and terms can easily make the difference between merely surviving vs. doing extremely well and really taking off. Unfortunately it seems some with the potential to really take off are being limited to only survival or small modest profit mode because of that. To me it is sad because I really like some of them and would like to see them take off.

I can't change it now, but my question should have been "Which, if any, might become popular with end users?"
IMO, none.

If you look at .biz & .info, which are established (15+ years); they have millions of regs and they are considered among the most successful of new extensions. But they are not popular at all. Even industry-specific TLDs like .travel .aero etc are not gaining traction in their respective industries. Why would that change ?

Thanks.

I agree.

.SUPPLY

There are tons of generic -supply terms (i.e water supply), and countless companies with supply in their name. It was built for end-users. And since "supply" is mostly put at the end of company names the new tld will make .com redundant since you can replace the end with a word that has meaning toward your business.

I think in each gTLD's , few hundreds of domains will survive. e.g :- Tour.travel will survive, social.network will survive, real.estate, cheap.ticket will survive. To be more clear what i meant is, the domain which will be short and makes sense are going to survive and will have good resale value in future. But as these are gTLD's two words are not going to survive but a one word or short domains like ft.network, my.house etc etc. These are going to survive . IMO

The ones to survive will be the one where there are ample big businesses that already have the extension in their names - making the companies' url look more tailor-made. These will at least grow the fastest in registrations because they are extensions built for real businesses rather than hopeful marketing....like .xyz

.tech + .technology for instance - there are thousands of companies with the word tech and technology in them.

Same goes for .accountants, .supply, .agency, .trading etc.

But while these types of domains are great for end users they wont be so lucrative for domainers. the generic globally recognized two-word phrases will be worth the most money for domainers... like real.estate which are few and far between. 99% of the good ones already regged... like work.place, casino.online etc..

Theres a lot of money in new gtld's but you needa get super premium generic terms or pay a lot of money to go bust on on 1-2 letter acronyms that just simply dont have much value yet and are quite expensive to reg.

Remeber, the rules that apply to .COM - do not apply to new gtlds.

But what .COM enthusiasts dont want you to know is that most of these generic two-word phrases are ranking much better than their .com equivalent in search engines. Their aftermarket prices over time will explode once people realize how good SEO is doing..

Domainers???
Such names are usually NOT regged... and selling by Registries up to 5-figure fee... and very often - yearly.

Fair enough - you are right about some good ones still in registry's hands or sold for big bucks by registry. But countless others have been regged by domainers.. like work.place which I already mentioned.
