The best thing would be guest blogging on blogs that are in your niche. Multiple benefits and some are immediate.

The best way to promote yourself is to use a variety of marketing techniques. A well-rounded effort will look alot more natural to the search engines than simply trying to round up a whole bunch of dofollow links. The more natural your efforts look, the better you will look to the search engines.

For example, article marketing is a great way to publish quality content and get quality backlinks. However, you can expand your efforts by bookmarking each article on social bookmarking sites, and Tweeting it or sharing it on other social networking sites. Or, if the same topic comes up on a forum somewhere, answer a question and post a link to your article to drive your point home (without spamming, of course! :)). That way, you can take 1 quality article and get it out in front of as many people as possible.

What is your website about?

I have a site that promotes my workshop and it has good conversion through the Search Engines but so much from Social Media sites. I think it really depends on what kind of site you have.

You can use all methods that you mention in your post to promote a website but for me bookmarking and directory submissions are one of the best methods

I prefer social media marketing, especially if you have lots of friends or can pay someone who has lots of friends on facebook to advertise for you.

That's true. All it takes is a Facebook page and a person (you/your friend) who has a lot of friends to suggest the page to, and you can begin a chain that can prove very beneficial to your site. Just plan it out and time it well and you'll be surprised with the results!

directory submissions are a waste of time, unless your promoted well in your specific niche directories, general directories are a waste of cyber space.

articles submissions are useless, unless you get people picking up and posting about them, if they just sit there, no one reads them, and the links are of little value.

Blog posting is ok, as long as it's not spam.
Classifieds are hard to work with, as 99% of them will never be seen, only those at the top.
social bookmarks are going out the window, as there to many doing it at this time.
Pay per click, only works if you have something of value, easy to judge, if you spend $100 and only mkae $90 it's a waste of time.

and 998 out of 1000 seo "proffesionals" "companies" will sell you all this crap, and do it automatically.

If you want real results, learn it yourself, and dont pay these guys, who offer 5000 submissions, it's a waste of time, money and resources.

Find a company who will work with you, not just take you url/email and hit "submitt"

You have to be very carefull of who you choose to work with, as most never ever get the reults they promise you.

this is coming from 5yrs of getting crap from almost every seo guy out there that i have tried.

I think that all of them in a complex are very very important for your SEO. I think that would be wrong to compare them or to say which is better or not.
