Frankly anything decent is going to auction. You might at well turn up on the auctions as mess around.

Check out something like TDNAM or SnapNames. You would probably have better luck.

www.justdropped.com is quite good, if you want to see both expired and expiring names (you can set things up to see both), and is versatile according to what dates you want, length of names, extensions, etc. It's free. The occasional 'okay' name comes through, but of course the good/best names are caught by dropcatchers and you'll need to bid for them. I find the expired names lists only let by names that someone might not immediately recognize as having value. Recently I've seen Yakut.com there (I missed it), most people just wouldn't know this is the name of an entire people in Northeast Russia; another name a few months back that comes to mind is PowerGoo.com which wouldn't be known outside of Photoshop enthusiasts like myself, wish I had been quick enough for that one also.
But mostly the names you find expired and available are that way for a very good reason.
