This is a tough one and would love to get opinions. There are competing issues which I'm sure all you know. I have a domain with a city and state abbreviation for .net and .org and another with just a city name for a .co. This city's name appears around the US about 4-5 times in total. This is why state can be important, e.g. Spring Hill, FL, Spring Hill, TN, etc. So the choices are for this city based website:

SpringHillTN.net or springhilltn.org

vs.

springhill.co

The danger is the .com issue with .co's. On the bright side, the .com site is not a substitute at all for the same city and has an entity and not a city. Users will know it's not the right site and it's not an alternative.

what about SpringHillTN.com
Good question - forgot to mention it. SpringHillsTN.com is taken by a domainer . Many of the cities are actually .org so the .org version is actually a very credible domain, perhaps as good if not better than the .com. It comes down to whether SpringHills.co is a more appealing choice and better "brand" if you will, shorter, etc.

I might not have the same mindset as those who register the .nets or .orgs of cities. Which I can understand their reasoning. But I'd prefer SpringHill.co over them. It's shorter and to the point.

Registering domain name the domain name is about a place or location, and if there are locations in the country, it is better to have a domain name which is specific i.e. there must not be ambiguity.

I think the org is good in your case.

Can't an acronym work in this case?. E.g.
SHTN or something similar, just a thought.

If you're talking about moving into the .us, .biz then maybe but I think you're always better with a .net or .org than those. And while the .co might be available, I'd rather get the name of the actual city as a .co than as a shorter abbreviation.

Thanks for the discussion guys. As I mentioned, this isn't such an easy one to decide. Both have their merits but I'm not sure whether the .co is just for search engine marketing but not good as a brand. It's still a ccTLD too.
