for domain names, what do people go for? I mean is it like the shorter the name the better....just for domain names in general. I was browsing through the forums and noticed the lists people put up with 3 and 4 letter/number domain names and was just wondering if those type names are a hot item for domain buyers.
I know people like unique names, and then the trendy/fad names, etc...Just wanting opinions of what is hot and what's not. Thanks in advance for your replies.

3 letter names are farily hot since they can be used for acronyms. Yes, shorter is somewhat better, but not always unless it helps to remember the website. For example, Godaddy has tdnam.com as it's auction site. Personally, I think they would be better off to market it as TheDomainAftermarket.com (which they own and don't even point to tdnam.com), even though it's longer. Every time I go there, I have to rethink what letters are in the pseuco acronym.

Short makes for an easier email address and takes less space on a business card, but doesn't always make it more memorable.

Saw that this thread had not been replied to - sohere goes.

I like smaller domain names, anything over 2 characters is too long.
Right now, if you want to catch a dying breed, get a 4 number .net. There are like 20 left (as of last time I read someones post) and at some point in the future they may be worth something

As of right now, hot items are as follows:
1. 3 Letter/number .com/net/org (but not a combo of letter/number)
2. 2 letter/number .com/net/org/ca
3. Traffic names (names that have been typically been caught using drop catchers like SnapNames, Pool, Name Winner and Enom's Club Drop.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if there is anything else you want help with by posting it on the forum and I will see it and answer it for you

Best of luck in the biz

Shorter is better, IMHO.
I beat this dead horse a lot, but even doritos is using innw.com as their new ad-campaign's website (Giving rise to a lot of typo sites ;) ).
4 letter .com's will continue to increase in value, as will 4# .nets (Those without "0" at the beginning, IMHO, are more intuitive. All other 4# .nets are gone).
3 letter .com's are still golden, will continue to rise as well.
3 letter .org and .net's are fetching high 3 figures to mid 4 figures recently as snapnames, the .net'sespecially will keep going up.
3 letter .us's have potential, especially after the current drop-phase.

All just predictions, and YMMV ;)

for domain names, what do people go for?

1. Mid-Long term Brandability value
2. Defining and naturally occurring keyword for the industry
3. Sounds and pronounces well
4. Minimal typo errors
5. Looks good textually
6. Growing industry
7. Current size of industry
8. No of indexed entries on google for the name eg, 20,000,000
9. Cost per click on Google for the name
10. No of already registered domains in GTLD and CCTLD namespace using the same keyword or name

Those names that satisfy criteria 1-5 are what you call alpha names.

2 letter .COMs
- 100 Number Only, - 676 Letter Only, - 520 Number&Letter Combinations

3 letter .COMs
- 1000 Number Only, - 17576 Letter Only, 28080 Number&Letter Combinations

4 letter .COMs
- 10000 Number Only, - 456976 Letter Only, 1212640 Number&Letter Combinations

1296 - 2 letter .COMs
46656 - 3 letter .COMs
1679616 - 4 letter .COMs
60466176 - 5 letter .COMs

Simple economics. The shorter the domain name, the lower the supply. Additionally, the shorter the domain name, the more flexible the use and therefore the shorter domain names are more valuable. As the internet keeps growing the demand for the shorter domain names will too. As more and more developing countries move into the internet, more and more short acronyms will be considered valuable.

It would be nice to have a nice 3 letter domain name.
