I am talking about hand registering. Go daddy for instance had a coupon that priced the first com registration at 0.99$ . But the rest are above 9$ each. For how much do you buy your coms ? Any way I can keep the rate at a minimum ?

$0.99 is well under cost. Those coupons are usually limited to 1 per person and it's understood you will be paying full price next year, unless you transfer out.
Registrars selling at $9 are not even making a $1 profit after processing & credit card fees.
It's a volume business.

If you buy great domains, paying $10 shouldn't be a cause for concern.

Check out: FastHosts.co.uk and Nominalia.com. Both running .com promos at a couple $$ a pop.

If you keep chasing coupons, your gonna end up with domains all over the place, and then you'll be paying full price for renewal anyways. Best to stick with one, imo

That depends on how many domains you have under management, I guess. With close to 2K names to feed, a few $$$ saved on each one amounts to a pretty penny! Money better spent on other things, like better tools of the trade and outsourcing some more mundane tasks. Not to mention: catching more domains! ;)

Granted that renewal promos are harder to come by, but with foresight, I rarely pay full price on renewals these days as well.

check out netfirms for example

The registrar was giving unlimited domains for 1.99 each. How did he make profit ?

I dunno. But registrars usually offset the loss with add-on services, hosting or you pay for extras like whois privacy. There often is a catch. I don't think this is great registrar for domainers. For example people are reporting issues when pushing domains. You have to make your time worthwhile.
If domainers are reluctant to pay the full price and have peace of mind, maybe their regs aren't worth $10 in the first place. That's the way I see it :)

Even if you get a coupon, the price is only for the first year. From the next year onward, you will have to pay the full price anyways. Better buy good domains even if not on a discounted price

Don't worry about that, after the 1st year, you can transfer to another registrar with transfer coupons to get the discount price on that new registrar, and the next 2nd year you then transfer again to another registrar with transfer coupons also, repeat this again :)
