Where do you see the domain industry 5 years from now?

Things are changing quickly in the online world, as well for domainers, both sales-wise and in monetizing sites. Where do you see things 5 years from now, as far as possibilities to earn, prices for domains in general, etc?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
AfternicAfternic
1. More development
2. PPC much lower than today (perhaps fueling the development)
3. CPA becomes a more established competitor to PPC. Call to Action domains receiving traffic and other domains converting well become increasingly valuable as a result.
4. Good domains continue to be worth good money. With a lower RPM, bad domains just aren't covering their costs. Domainers are increasingly cutting the fat and investing in domains which have real value.
5. Lots of people get burnt bad on new vanity extensions
6. Lots of newbies moaning about how if they would have started in 2008 they'd be so much ahead of where they are now and that it was so much easier to make money back then.

I can see alot of extensions fading away and .com names going up in value by loads.

I have a little theory about how I think all these new extensions coming out are going to get some heavy media attention when they do which will draw in a whole lot more people into giving domaining a try and will eventually end up with a whole lot more people investing in what does work.

Will have to see what happens, but I'm betting on .com coming out on top, as always, and appreciating considerably in the future as well.

I think it is too dangerous that our world today is being ruled by Google and its Adsense monopoly. It is never good for mankind to let a single entity take control of our domaining way of life. When everyone are enslaved to compete for their Page Rank, you know you are living in a world governed by a single dictatorial set of rules.

I think 5 years from now, the world will be clamoring for an ingenius new form of Search algorithm landscape, and a new advertising revenue model that gives a bigger slice of the profit pie to the content owners, rather than the middle men.

Google isn't the only search engine...

There is also many websites who don't use adsense, who actually (god forbid) sell things or a service, and make a living off of it!

More development, but quality development, no automatic duplicate content stuff, that will die off sooner or later.

Industry matures and more players will come from all spheres.
The cost of top domain will be 50 million.

I see more and more development for the mobile spectrum, and apps/widgets/etc being hugely more popular than they are now. The sites that create and offer those will be immensely popular. More mobile tools for domainers too.
I think there will be more vanity extensions but they will be virtually useless. .com will still be strongest, unless some entirely new mode of the internet comes along (which i do see happening but probably not in 5 years).

I see everybody out there with their own website created with a simple chip you can buy and plug into your pc....the plug-in will ask you a few simple questions and do all the tech work for you. These plug-in website makers will be sold cheaply over the net and at your local walmart....maybe everywhere else.

I tend to agree with this scenario....

I tend to agree here. The internet foundation is very stable/productive, yet much room for growth and further improvement. More big money will come into the picture as quality generic domains (geo-targeted) will be commonly understood as the gates to the future. And big business will want to claim those gates to position themselves for longevity and maximum leverage.

Local newspapers are dying since people now overwhelmingly go to the net for news and information. Increasing amounts are being spent in online advertising. This trend will continue in a very strong way, and the domain industry will flourish right along with it.

Are 50 million zimbabwe dollars even worth 1 cent USD now? I can't keep up with the inflation -- the math is getting insane.

Yes - read this: http://www.techshout.com/software/2...nternet-being-developed-by-netalter-software/

5 years or 15 - I believe that domain names will be mostly collector's items...
