just what i wanted to hear! Is there anyway to tell if it will just become available or go into an auction?

Depends on the registrar. Some registrars pre-release their expiring domains, where they sell the domain to the highest bidder in an open auction. Some registrars follow the full deletion cycle, where it's available for reg by anybody 65-80 days after it expires.
