When registering a new domain..

You see the .com extension is taken, in which cases would you take the .net or .org and in which cases would you pass ?

If you definitely have a specific and "exact" domain in mind and the .com is either developed or for sale but out of your current budget, you may begin your startup using an available .net or .org and then someday trade up to the .com as the company becomes profitable but only if you feel the expense of acquiring the dot com would pay for itself by translating into added customers and higher and more profitable conversions for whatever widget, it is, you market. Don't discount many of the new extensions either, like say, perhaps a dot shop?

Depends on whether or not the .com is developed and for how long has it been developed. Their site will at least initially draw most of YOUR traffic. If the .com is for sale and you do not want to pay their price, then yes buy the .net and/or .org. We did that with my wife's business 12 years ago. Registered her .net and .org. In the next two years the .com just dropped and we grabbed it too.

As a rule I prefer. Com or cctld but have been known to buy the odd gtld but do t own a. Net or. org and I don't see that changing anytime soon

You might even try an alternate spelling. In 2004 I thought I wanted to be in web hosting. I wanted the name clicktheweb(com) but it was taken and I refused to pay their price. I registered klicktheweb(com) instead. In 2013 clicktheweb(com) dropped and i bought it. I now have both although I do not actively host anymore. Too much competition and too much work. Domaining is easier
