it did get renewed i checked the domain in question with 3-4 different whois lookup sites and some of them showed a new expiration date of 2012...that was a very "fml" moment
I think that it also has a slightly different time period depending on which domain registrar you use. I have noticed different times of domains going back on the open market when using different registrars.

It may not be renewed. During the grace period, registry may have added one year to the expiration date.
See if the status is ONHOLD. This means that the real expiry is likely a year less than it states.
If you contacted them I doubt this is the case.
A lot of people let domains "expire" and gauge interest before renewing. There's no penalty for waiting 30 days. In fact, domains can be sold at GoDaddy and Enom auction and still be renewed by the registrant. At Dynadot it doesn't even cost extra! You can see an auction bids and then after the fact renew.
