My experience would indicate that generally the singular is better w/ plural being a close second. But there's a multitude of instances where the plural is either more accurate or sounds better as well as instances where the two are both equally appropriate. Be careful w/. grammatical correctness in spelling however. In your example, "sexs" would be spelled "sexes", although w/ that keyword, I would take them both if available. hehe.
