What's the deal with .ie domains?

I've been looking around at .ie domains and I can't find really any clear information as to how to acquire one, the cost, registers that sell it. I've read numerous things such as, only ie businesses can get one, you must give a reason for your claim to one, that they can only be brought on 1 website.

Here's what I did find - http://www.domainregistry.ie/RegFees.php

cheers.

You can buy .ie names elsewhere (eurodns.com for example) but you'll still have to fax/post corresponding documentation to the registry within 30 days.

You've probably already seen it, but for the benefit of others interested in the thread: http://www.domainregistry.ie/QuickGuideToRegistrations.php

You have to demonstrate a substantive connection with Ireland if you are not an Irish business or citizen. Non-Irish businesses are allowed to register if they own a European community trademark or Irish trademark. Entitlement to the domain has to be demonstrated - that generally consists of an Irish company or business name. If you are in the UK or the US and can demonstrate an ongoing trade with Irish clients, then you may be able to apply.

It is not an extension for speculation and the cost of registering an Irish .ie domain is a lot higher than .com or other TLDs. I would not recommend using EuroDNS or any non-Irish registrar for registering .ie domains because of the complex issues that can arise. It would be better to use one of the big three Irish hosters (Hosting365.ie, Blacknightsolutions.com or Novara.ie) to register .ie domains. However as I pointed out earlier, there has to be a substantive connection to Ireland - otherwise we'd have a few hundred million nth generation Irish applying for their .ie domain. :)

I have a few International Trademarks on generic terms and registered them under .ie with EuroDNS. No problems. I think I have them now more then a half year. No questions from the registry. I think as long the registrar is accredited there should be no issue.

It is not so much a question of the registrar (technically a .ie reseller under Irish law - same as a registrar really) being accredited. It is whether the registrar would know what to do if there were any problems. The Irish .ie registrars tend to be far more streamlined in dealing with IEDR. I'd advocate using national registrars in each ccTLD just to be safe. But that is a conservative viewpoint.
