Q. Do you think it's worthwhile trying to monetize the name by building a site with adsense? or?

Look at extended search terms as well for the domain and for the most common extended searches put up a few pages of additional info on the site.

Check with Google Adwords Tool how much they are paying for those search terms associated with that niche.

If it's just 0.02 cents per click, you may want to wait for a one-dollar Godaddy coupon code before you buy the domain. You might not breakeven for a year.

It's worth a punt with those exact searches and CPC. What are you going to be out? Your regfee and your time.

You are unlikely going to get the top-dollar end of that CPC. Normally Google gives that top-dollar to domains in your niche that have high page ranks. But since you're starting from scratch, you'll probably get just half of it. the low ad bidders.

Also, i think 9,000 searches are kinda low. Presuming you picked a niche with a high "cynic" audience, you can presume only half of those 9,000 would even consider clicking ads on your site. If you get 3 clicks per month at 20 cents, you can breakeven a Godaddy 7-dollar domain in 1 year.

But as what someone has suggested, see if you can sell products using affiliates with your niche. Just a few sales can get you to breakeven, then drop the domain if you can't improve the revenue anymore.

The CPC that google give not accurate, in my experience, the CPC also depends on the country of the traffic, usually traffic from US have more higher CPC

9k exact is a quality number if you can get the top spot. I believe it will be worth your time to develop it & GET that top spot. You'll pull decent traffic and some extra steady cash if you do it right.
