As to your copyright question, I would google them a LOT. Google the whole domain name as a url, then I'd google it as just a name, then in pieces- spread the words out. See what kind of results you get. If sites come up, check and see if in their copyright statement that it states your domain name. If not, then you should be good :)

Sorry, zero7starz, but wrong, wrong wrong.

You don't copyright a company or product name, you trademark it. Copyright applies to original works - things like articles, photos, illustrations And, you don't need a copyright statement to protect this content - it's automatically protected under copyright law.

Look up US trademarks at uspto.gov. I'm sure lookup URL's for other countries are posted somewhere in this forum.

Yes, I'm aware of this. But if you don't find any information, or any hint that anything in this domain name has been copyrighted/trademarked then you should be okay. If he searched for one of his names and found that nothing had been done/used under that name then there would be no issue. However, if something did come up, and the information on the site stated that they had rights to it, then there would be an issue.

I agree that googling the name is a good way to see if anyone is using the term and its a good way to flush out names that might be common law (unregistered but enforceable in certain cases due to a history of use in commerce) marks, BUT they don't need a formal statement on a website in order to have copyright (which is automatic and does not apply to domains) or trademark rights ... and lack of google results isn't proof that there's no trademark.

And if there IS a tm, googling it won't tell you what classes of goods and services it's registered for (certain types of tm's can co-exist with similar marks as long as they're being used for completely different things)
