I had an Atari 800xl (1983) with 64K ram (wow). It had a 5 1/4 floppy and tape (cassette) for storing programs. Hooked up to 13" color tv (which my son still uses today in his room). Came with built in BASIC for writing programs. Also took the Atari game cartridges. I remember having a pretty cool baseball game that I played a lot.

I don't know if it was my first one or not - but I had an Adam Coleco - shouldn't say 'had' - because I still have it - and the big old desk thing that I bought to hold it all - plus all the programs. Can you say PACK RAT? ha ha ha.

I just remember using Windows 3.1 and trying to draw in Microsoft Paint. That was a long time ago. I also remember how long it would take to boot up! That was about the same time when AOL first came out and people started to use the internet. Man I hated dial up. ;)

My first computer was a laptop in the mid-late-nineties, probably around 1998-ish. It was designed for Windows 95 but had been upgraded to 98 and it was very, very slow because of it. Needless to say, 16mb of RAM and a 100Mhz CPU was not fast enough for 98 :)

However, it broke after about a month. Gutted!

A couple of years later, I found an old system I had stored in my wardrobe which was from 96! Never got the chance to use it though so I had no idea what it ran, but I know that it too was a 100Mhz Processor. Pentium MMX all the way!

And finally, a couple of years ago, I got my hands on a slightly better system than the one mentioned above, with a whopping 133Mhz Processor. I got this one to run however and surprisingly it worked rather well with a Linux Live-CD. So much so, I considered keeping it for a bit until I got my new computer :D Suffice to say, I had a change of heart when I realised that I would have to carry it 2 miles to home on the Bus!

Anything under 100Mhz though, I don't think I could touch. I'd need a manual probably!

I remember being on dial up with AOL many many years ago. They kept booting me off (heavy Internet user), so I ditched them and went with a local provider. Remember getting all those cd's in the mail. I think somebody actually had a site that would tell you an address to mail all your AOL cd's to and then they would send them all back to AOL. or something like that.

AppleII+ with 48K of RAM. I was so excited when I got a micromodemII and could dial into the university mainframe at 300 baud. A couple of years later I went portable with an Osborn :)

Timex Sinclair 1000
2K Ram, that's right, 2k.
Floppies didn't exist back then, you stored programs and data on standard cassette tapes.

The first business computer I worked on was a DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) PDP 11/70. I started at the company in 1986, and I'm still there...We ran everything on this machine from inventory systems, accounting, purchasing, etc. We had 3 removable RM03 disk packs that stored about 67 meg each. Every month, a tech from DEC would have to come in and do a head alignment on the drives (with an oscilloscope, for all you old guys that still know what an oscilloscope is), which would take about 4 hrs to do, so we would not have a head crash and loose all of our data. Check out the link below for a pic of the PDP 11/70. It looked kind a like the W.O.P.E.R from War Games with all the flashing lights. How times have changed....

Me too..the damn extra ram would pop off too after doing hours of coding. It was still a cool little computer with the membrane keyboard.

Freaky... the first computer I owned was a Sinclair 1000 that I won in an art contest. No accessories came with my "prize", so I couldn't do too much on it. I wish I still had it though... it'd be quite a relic.

My second computer was a used Atari 400, which I mostly just played games on. My third computer was an Atari 800xl bought by my parents. I had a choice between a new computer or a used car... I picked the computer. I had the tape drive first, then the big floppy drive. I remember having a split-screen Lucasfilm game that kicked some serious ass. It was called Ballblazer. Man I loved that game. You can check out a screenshot and description here... http://www.electriceggplant.com/ballblazer.html

In 1985(?) I tried to make a boxing game in basic on my Atari 800XL. I gave up after many, many hours and to this day I am still clueless at computer programming. I sold the computer a little more than a year after getting it. I think I got like $350 for it and all the accessories and games I'd accumulated.

Mine is packed away in a box at my parents house. I should pull it out and fire it up one of these days!
