I tried doing a forum search but didn't find much on this subject. I'm interested in hearing what others are doing for record keeping.

What information do you keep?
In what format (email, paper, spreadsheet, database, etc)?
How often do you update?
Do you track renewals/hosting?
Do you track development time?

Anything along those lines.

Appreciate it!

I keep track of all my domains and their registrant info in a spreadsheet. I also keep track of all sales in a separate sheet, and I try to keep track of as much as I can on paper.

Some use Domain Research Tool's portfolio function, while others use notepad or excel. While DRT's is the easiest way to do it, if you devote some time and make it a routing excel is just as good.

Thanks for those posts.

I actually hadn't run accross DRT before, so I downloaded the trial. While it exceeds my needs (and even my ambitions!) it did give me some ideas about what data is considered important to professionals. OTOH, it is truly delightful to have something be so much more than one needs that price is irrelvant rather than have it be exactly what one wants and price be prohibitive!

:hehe:

Guess I'll keep playing with excel for a while.

Not tracking them, too much trouble, they can all be auto-renewed.

Interesting. But that raises the question: do domains have basis? I just assumed that, like any other form of property, you could deduct cost from profit, when sold. True, for domains registered recently for <$10 that's not much, but for my 10-year old domains registered at $35/yr (only game in town back then) it's a sum worth deducting.

So, am I mistaken about the ability to deduct cost, and therefore the need to prove it?

You do indeed need to keep track of investment + added cost such as renewals, advertising, etc. Income from sales in taxable (at least in the US)

Try our windows desktop software at: http://www.urldom.com/software.html

I use it every day and my taxman just loves me.
