This is traffic that 'types in' an address into the browser address bar the website they are seeking instead of using some other way of finding the website -like through a search engine.

Type-in traffic is just that of what James (above me) said. As an example, let's use NamePros.com (which thousands of people are used to going to everyday by entering it in their address bar of their browser). Since many people know the domain by heart, they just enter it in their address bar whenever they want to go to it. This is called 'type-in traffic' because there really isn't a refering source (link, search engine, etc.) it's off of the top of their heard.

Type-in traffic is traffic that derives entirely from people typing domain names into their browser without having prior knowledge of a website being attached to that domain name i.e. it is the pulling power of the name itself

The first half of this is true, the second half is not necessarily true. Many type-ins are done knowing full well what the web site is.

When a web surfer enters a domain name in their browser address bar, this is called a "type-in". The traffic you get from this method is called type-in-traffic.

Type-ins occur when

1. The user enters a URL that he knows and perhaps remembers.

2. The user meant to type a word into a Search Engine's search form, but didn't realize that the address bar was the current window.

3. The user deliberately enters a keyword into their browser address bar thinking that the domain might contain the content they are looking for.

Unique visitor refers to a person who visits a web site more than once within a specified period of time when tracking the amount of traffic on a web site. Software that tracks and counts web site traffic distinguishes between visitors who only visit the site once and unique visitors who return to the site.

Unique visitors are measured according to their unique IP addresses, which are like online fingerprints, and unique visitors are counted only once no matter how many times they visit the site.

Unique visitors are used to calculate two different ways:

1. Unique visitors by browser.
2. Unique visitors by IP address.
