I accepted $25K in 2001 for a domain that I know I could get 4 times that aamount now. I kick myself everytime I think of it.

In addition to that I lost the whole $25K in the tech stock crash of 2001 trading options.
That is sad indeed. :'(

If I may ask, what's the advantage of keeping your valuable names secret? Wouldn't it help you gain publicity?

EDIT: Is it to protect the confidentiality of the potential buyers?

Well if the deal's over and out then there's no real harm I guess. I suppose people are worried about discussing the name, everybody chiming in saying that they should have taken it, it's worth way less, then a new potential buyer down the road finding the thread whilst researching the name.

Anyway I'm happy to show you mine if you show me yours :)

I turned down $25K for "hobart" in the com-dot-au extension. Wise move?

I turned down a 170k offer on a name I later sold for 200k. I also turned down a 175k offer on a domain I still own.

My buddy who started with me back in the early days just turned down 2.4 million dollars for a domain that makes about $300 to $400 a day in parking. He said it was too low. It's a four letter house product. He has others that make over $1000 a day in parking..... needless to say he does not need to sell and is living comfortably. His whole family owns domains like these since they started in 1995.... it's crazy how much they make....the whole family bought in and they don't sell domains and never read the forums and are not involved in the domain industry in any way other than parking the domains they bought in 1995. They stopped buying after early 1996.
Nice. That kind of success just can not be repeated. Getting domains of that quality happened only once in time and if you were lucky enough to be old enough and even know about the internet, congrats. Of course there still opportunities today but nothing like that.

If people knew what names Seabass, Giode, and a lot of other people here own... it would make it a LOT harder to buy names at a fair price. Just like if Bill Gates joined the forum his user name wouldn't be BillGates... every $xxx domain would become an $x,xxx, xxx domain. Never show your hand... :)

I see your point...

On the other hand, if someone is known to hold a valuable portfolio, there are two benefits:

(i) People approach you with offers to sell domains to you - ie you get to hear about a good name becoming available - with the opportunity to negotiate privately.

(ii) People approach you privately with offers to buy your names.

And, in both cases, people know you're probably not a fool, too - so, discussions about domain buy/sell are often more realistic.

Either way, a domainer with a valuable portfolio isn't going to pay over the odds, or sell unrealistically low, for any domain.

But, also....I can understand some people's desire for simple privacy....Or, not wishing to draw the attention of scammers, or hackers.

Or maybe kidnappers, extortionists, etc.... "Transfer those domains to this account at that Russian registrar by 5pm tomorrow or else!"

55k for a .fr name (economy in french)

.fr is very interesting because it was open to everyone in France only from 2006. And know they are speaking of opening worldwide (but just speaking). Wait and see.
A few registrar offer to register .fr names when not living in France.

I think it will be sold more, .fr is getting more and more popular in France, tv ads...

What do you'll think, is there any scope of earning big on .cn domain extensions? I have a few .cn domains which I feel can fetch a decent value, however, a little hesitant on trying it out. Any idea about the premium .cn domain name market?
