It's a protocol so that your network communicates with the browser. The 's' is an additional security effort. It helps to stop eavesdroppers from getting data like the site you're on etc (though this isn't always the case)

You should read up on internet protocols. Interesting stuff.

HTTPs uses port 443 by default (but could technically use pretty much any port). HTTPs requires an SSL certificate to operate correctly which allows for the data to be encrypted that is sent between the client and the server.
