I am doing a web design for a company that does co-location, and was just wondering what the hell exactly that is. I'm assuming it's related to hosting in some way.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Co-location is the business concept of including multiple similar businesses under the same roof

Cool, that explanation has good short-description potential! Thanks. :)

Certainly not in this case it isn't.

Co-location is having your website hosted in several locations. This has the benefit that if 1 server (or indeed the whole data centre) goes down then the site is still reachable from the other location where it is hosted.

If you use databases you have the added problem of replicating the database as well to ensure that it is always accessible.

Thanks for the clarification. Cheers.

i always thought co-location was when you placed your server in another persons/company's rack at the data center

ethix generally that is what happens but not necessarily the case. For example Google have a form of co-location but they use their own data centres.

If you or I on the other hand who have limited budgets and cannot afford our own data centres wish to co-locate we would hire servers in different data centres. Or even possibly rent space on other people's servers.
