What extensions would you register?

Ok lets say you find a perfect domain that isn't regged - sports.com

Would you reg sports.com ONLY, or would you reg .net/org/info/tv/biz and all other extensions as well?

What domain extensions do you consider a MUST HAVE when developing the domain name sports.com?

.US domains.US domains
If the name was great, a single word generic, then I would grab what I (as American) consider the 'Big6'.

.com - .net - .org - .us - .info - .biz

Of course, if the name is THAT great, then it's hard to imagine finding it not registered. :!:

Also, even if it's not a single word generic domain, but is a name I plan to build/develop a business on, and put my heart and soul into, then I would still grab the 'Big6' to cover my 'brand'. Much easier to buy them for reg fee now, then try to negotiate with another seller later.

If I were developing a name as good as that, the Big6 without doubt. I think it all boils down to strategy though. A weaker name and I might just grab the .com or .net if available, and bank on development, either mine or someone with the better TLD.

If it was really good, and all the other extensions were available then I would reg them all

any extention is fine with me, depending on the keyword/s. I like to have a diverse portfolio.

Well I went with .biz for a while.. but I'm having some hard time selling them :) I will only register .com from now on.

I would only register .com or .net. Even .net I only register if the name is good - .com is the gold standard.

Well if the domain is truely premium as sports.com is, then I would register:

1.com
2.net
3.org
4.us
5.info
6.biz

However, if the domain is only good, and not premium, I would only get .com, and maybe .net.

If high profile get all that make sense. Sometimes a .biz or .us don't quite fit, so should be passed up. For example some things are obviously in no way a business, so .biz isn't that good. Also, something like OntarioHotels.us, a place that isn't in the US wouldn't necessarily be a very marketable .us domain. In this case the .ca or a gTLD would be much better.

thanks for the replies guys :) I ended up reggin .com/net/org/info/biz. Not sure if I'll give .us a go since I'm not a US citizen or a permanent resident over there.

Could I get in trouble if I reg the .us domain even if I don't live over there?

i'll register all types of gTLDs,but choose one of them as main domain by the website's type.

good point. but remember there are mant good extensions out there that keywords havent been registered in yet. IF you can make a profit there, then do it.
