What does STATUS: Inactive mean?

Can anyone tell me when I do a whois on a domain name and it comes up with details, but status is inactive what this means?

I have tried regging a couple of them, and it came up with information, but status inactive. It comes up available to register on some registrars, but not on others? I'm confused.

it means there are no active nameservers.
in other words the nameservers (if they exist) dont resolve, so it isnt parked, and it isnt a website, but it is registered.
