What date does a domain drop?

In the thread below, tripleputt mentions that lwe.com and zvp.org are dropping on July 7

When I looked up the WHOIS records, it says that the record is expiring in 2008, and the last update was on June 1, 07

So how do you know at what date a domain is dropping?

Can you know of the time too or you just take wild guesses?

Also, is it possible to hand reg good names, when you're competing against automated scripts?
